About the Lab
Professor Ah Young Oh's research lab specializes in pediatric and cardiac anesthesiology, with a focus on optimizing anesthetic techniques for improved patient outcomes in vulnerable populations. The lab investigates novel anesthetic agents—such as sevoflurane, remimazolam, and desflurane—for their hemodynamic stability and recovery profiles during complex surgeries, including spinal fusion and cerebrovascular procedures. A key research direction involves the early detection and management of rare airway complications like tracheomalacia using advanced tools such as fiberoptic bronchoscopy. The lab also develops and validates pediatric-specific anxiety assessment tools to enhance preoperative care and psychological preparation.

15We experienced an unexpected tracheomalacia exhibiting CO2 retention and an increased peak inspiratory pressure after beginning an operation; it was confirmed with fiberoptic bronchoscopy. If there are no problems in the circuit or tube when the patient shows CO2 retention and increases in peak inspiratory pressure, the fiberoptic bronchoscope is helpful
The use of sevoflurane in maintaining anesthesia during INR was associated with faster recovery, less patient movement during the procedure, and a more stable hemodynamic response when compared to propofol.
Tracheomalacia results in narrowing of the tracheal lumen during increased intrathoracic pressure caused by a thin tracheal wall. Symptomatic tracheomalacia is known to cause airway obstruction during general anesthesia (1). However, there are few reports showing these respiratory difficulties. We report an unexpected tracheomalacia exhibiting CO2 retention and an increased peak inspiratory pressure after the beginning of the operation; it was confirmed with fiberoptic bronchoscopy. Case Report
Unilateral brain regional perfusion in neonates and children may be a useful technique with no significant neurological deficit.
Remimazolam anesthesia may provide better hemodynamic stability during cerebrovascular bypass surgery than propofol-induced and desflurane-maintained anesthesia.
Purpose: The modified Yale Preoperative Anxiety Scale (mYPAS) was developed for evaluating the level of preoperative anxiety in children. The purpose of this study was to develop a Korean version of the mYPAS (K-mYPAS) and to establish its validity and reliability based on the Korean preoperative pediatric patients. Methods: K-mYPAS was made through stringent back-translation procedure. Total enrolled 102 patients answered questionnaires of Korean version of State-Trait Anxiety Inventory for Chi
Remifentanil 0.20 ± 0.05 µg/kg with propofol 1 mg/kg resulted in excellent LMA insertion in 50% of elderly patients without significant hemodynamic changes during emergency airway management.
Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis is a neurodegenerative disease caused by the degeneration of upper and lower motor neurons. The disorder causes muscle weakness and atrophy throughout the body. There is an unexpected response to depolarizing or nondepolarizing muscle relaxants, and risk of perioperative respiratory failure is high. Careful monitoring and minimal doses of anesthetics are needed. We report a case of general anesthesia in a patient with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis. We used proper do
Background : To reduce the risk of Mendelson''s syndrome, it is customary to fast patients for 8 hours before anesthesia. However preoperative fast is unpleasant for patients, who complain frequently of thirst and dry mouth, and this conventional fast may be over-cautious. We have studied the effect of ingestion of barley tea, a Korean popular beverage, 3 hours before anesthesia on gastric contents (volume and pH), blood sugar level, thirst, and anxiety. Methods : We studied prospectively 284
