Professor Chi Ryang Chung's research lab focuses on improving critical care outcomes through the integration of clinical biomarkers, machine learning, and psychological assessment in intensive care settings. The lab investigates predictive biomarkers such as procalcitonin and C-reactive protein for sepsis prognosis, explores machine learning models for early delirium detection using electronic health records, and examines cognitive and psychological sequelae in ICU survivors. A central theme is the development of data-driven tools to enhance early diagnosis, intervention, and long-term recovery in critically ill patients.

For effective CP infusion in MERS, donor plasma with a neutralization activity of a PRNT titre ≥1:80 should be used. ELISA IgG could substitute for the neutralization test in resource-limited situations.
This study aimed to investigate cognitive impairment and psychological distress of critically ill patients at discharge from intensive care unit (ICU). This study included 30 critically ill patients who had neither pre-existing dementia nor ongoing delirium. At ICU discharge, they performed a screening test for cognitive impairment (Mini-Cog test) and completed questionnaires for depression (Patient Health Questionnaire-2, PHQ-2) and for 4 stressful experiences during ICU stay including nightmar
A machine learning approach based on electronic health record data can be used to predict delirium within 24 hours of ICU admission. RF, XGBoost, DNN, and LR models were used, and they effectively predicted delirium. However, with the potential to advise ICU physicians and prevent ICU delirium, prospective studies are required to verify the algorithm's performance.
The optimal timing of enteral nutrition (EN) in sepsis patients is controversial among societal guidelines. We aimed to evaluate the evidence of early EN's impact on critically ill sepsis patients' clinical outcomes. We searched the MEDLINE, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane Library, ClinicalTrials.gov, and ICTRP databases on 10 March 2023. We included studies published after 2004 that compared early EN versus delayed EN in sepsis patients. We included randomized controlled trials (RCTs), non-RCTs, cohor
Sepsis is a common cause of delirium in the intensive care unit (ICU). Recently, vitamin C and thiamine administration has been gaining interest as a potential adjunct therapy for sepsis. We investigated the impact of early vitamin C and thiamine administration on ICU delirium-free days among critically ill patients in septic shock. We performed a single-center, retrospective study of patients who visited the emergency department (ED) from January 2017 to July 2018. We categorized patients into
Recently, extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support has been increasingly applied in acute respiratory failure. The ECMO brings some advantages for enhancing the capacity of lung regeneration. Thus, the timing of determining irreversibility of the injured lung could be delayed. In this study, we experienced a case of prolonged maintenance of veno-venous ECMO for 104 days that resulted in native lung recovery. In this case, the initial empirical treatment showed no response within 4 week
Among patients received ICU care, those who experienced delirium during hospitalization had an increased risk of developing cognitive impairment or psychiatric problems post-discharge. Many patients showed multiple cognitive impairment and psychiatric problems during the follow-up period. Efforts to decrease these problems should be made to increase the quality of life of these ICU survivors.
Ketamine may be a safe and feasible analgesic for medical and cardiac ICU patients who received mechanical ventilation support as an opioid-sparing agent without adverse hemodynamic effects.
Cardiac output (CO) is an important parameter in fluid management decisions for treating hemodynamically unstable patients in intensive care unit. The gold standard for CO measurements is the thermodilution method, which is an invasive procedure with intermittent results. Recently, electrical impedance tomography (EIT) has emerged as a new method for noninvasive measurements of stroke volume (SV). The objectives of this paper are to compare EIT with an invasive pulse contour analysis (PCA) metho
Pulmonary artery catheterization (PAC) has been used as a clinical standard for cardiac output (CO) measurements on humans. On animals, however, an ultrasonic flow sensor (UFS) placed around the ascending aorta or pulmonary artery can measure CO and stroke volume (SV) more accurately. The objective of this paper is to compare CO and SV measurements using a noninvasive electrical impedance tomography (EIT) device and three invasive devices using UFS, PAC-CCO (continuous CO) and arterial pressure-
There was a pandemic of influenza A (H1N1) in 2009; in Korea, there was also an H1N1 epidemic in 2016. We aim to investigate whether survival had improved in the setting of recent advances in intensive care unit (ICU) management. We conducted a retrospective analysis of acute respiratory failure patients with H1N1 influenza pneumonia in 2016 and 2009 respectively at two tertiary referral hospitals in Korea. A total of 28 patients were treated in 2016, and 34 in 2009. There was no significant dif
Recent studies showed that physical and/or neuropsychiatric impairments significantly affect long-term mortality of ICU survivors. We conducted this study to investigate that simplified measurement of physical function and level of consciousness at hospital discharge by attending nurses could predict long-term outcomes after hospital discharge. A retrospective analysis of prospectively and retrospectively collected data of 246 patients who received medical ICU treatment was conducted. We grouped
