Professor Duk L. Na's research lab specializes in neurological and rehabilitative sciences, with a primary focus on swallowing disorders (dysphagia) in patients with neurodegenerative diseases. The lab investigates the distinct physiological and behavioral patterns of swallowing dysfunction in dementia subtypes, particularly Alzheimer’s disease and vascular dementia, using videofluoroscopic swallowing studies. Patients with dementia develop dysphagia some time during the clinical course of their disease. The aim of this study was to compare the swallowing functions of the 2 most common types of dementia: Alzheimer disease (AD) and vascular dementia (VaD).
