Professor Eun Sil Kim's research lab specializes in pediatric gastroenterology and critical care nursing, with a focus on understanding the impact of chronic inflammatory conditions such as Crohn’s disease on children and adolescents. The lab investigates disease phenotypes, treatment outcomes, and risk factors for complications, including pressure injuries in critically ill patients. A key emphasis is placed on improving clinical management through evidence-based approaches, particularly in pediatric populations where data are limited.

It is important to pay attention to the indirect effects of the social distancing implemented to prevent the spread of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic on children and adolescent health. The aim of the present study was to explore impacts of a reduction in physical activity caused by COVID-19 outbreak in pediatric patients diagnosed with obesity. This study conducted between pre-school closing and school closing period and 90 patients aged between 6- and 18-year-old were included. Co
Despite the strong influence of the gut microbiota on atherosclerosis, a causal relationship between atherosclerosis pathophysiology and gut microbiota is still unverified. This study was performed to determine the impact of the gut microbiota on the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis caused by genetic deficiency. To elucidate the influence of the gut microbiota on atherosclerosis pathogenesis, an atherosclerosis-prone mouse model (C1q/TNF-related protein 9-knockout (CTRP9-KO) mice) was generated.
The aac(6')-Ib gene was detected in 86 of 555 (15.5%) Enterobacteriaceae isolates. Among these 86 aac(6')-Ib-positive isolates, 19 (22.0%) were positive for aac(6')-Ib-cr: 4 of 31 (12.9%) Enterobacter spp., 7 of 13 (53.8%) Escherichia coli isolates, and 8 of 42 (19.0%) Klebsiella pneumoniae isolates. There was a strong association between aac(6')-Ib-cr and OXA-1 and CTX-M-1 group beta-lactamase genes. One aac(6')-Ib-positive K. pneumoniae isolate carried both aac(6')-Ib-cr and qnrS.
The aim of the present study was to evaluate the effect of ENS on cognitive impairment induced by scopolamine and its potential neuroprotective effect against glutamate-induced cytotoxicity in HT22 cell and to investigate the underlying mechanisms. ENS (3, 10, 30, and 100 mg/kg), scopolamine (1 mg/kg), and donepezil (1 mg/kg) were administered to mice during a test period. Scopolamine impaired memory and learning in a water maze test and a passive avoidance test. The neuroprotective effect of EN
IY-81149 (2-[(4-methoxy-3-methyl)-2-pyridinyl]methylsulfinyl -5-(1H-pyrrol-1-yl)-1H-benzimidazole, CAS 172152-36-2) is a new proton pump inhibitor and expected to be an antiulcer drug. Its general pharmacological effects were studied in this paper. The doses given were vehicle control, 0.3, 1, 3, 100, 300 and 1000 mg/kg and were administered orally. The animals used in this study were mouse, rat, guinea pig and beagle dog. IY-81149 decreased spontaneous locomotor activity at 1000 mg/kg and showe
The overall performance of AB-MRI was similar to that of FD-MRI in distinguishing between benign and malignant lesions. AB-MRI showed lower sensitivity and higher specificity than FD-MRI, as 15% of the cancers were misclassified compared to FD-MRI.
In pediatric Crohn's disease (CD) patients, it is important to define the disease phenotype at diagnosis for stratifying risk. In this retrospective study, we aimed to assess the disease phenotype compared to EUROKIDS registry and analyze disease outcome of pediatric CD patients according to upper gastrointestinal (GI) tract involvement. A total of 312 patients were included. The median age at diagnosis was 13.7 years and 232 patients (74.4%) were identified to have upper GI involvement at diagn
Crohn disease (CD) is a multifactorial inflammatory disorder that can affect all segments of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract but typically involves the ileum and/or colon. To assess patient prognosis and choose appropriate treatment, it is necessary to accurately evaluate the factors influencing poor outcomes, including disease phenotype. Pediatric CD involving the upper GI (UGI) tract has become increasingly recognized with the introduction of routine upper endoscopy with biopsies for all patie
