Professor Hyeok-Hee Lee's research lab focuses on cardiovascular and metabolic health, with a strong emphasis on the prevention and management of cardiometabolic diseases in aging populations. Her work explores the interplay between cardiovascular risk factors, diabetes, liver disease, and cancer survivorship, particularly examining how lifestyle changes, such as physical activity and smoking cessation, influence long-term cardiovascular outcomes. The lab also investigates the clinical implications of conditions like thrombocytopenia and hepatic fibrosis in patients with chronic diseases, aiming to identify early markers and improve patient prognosis.

CVD mortality and hospitalization have gradually increased in the last decade, and a substantially high proportion of adults were carrying more than 1 cardiovascular risk factor in 2018. With the rapid population aging, a continued increase in CVD appears inevitable in Korea. Concerted and sustained approaches are essential to achieve early prevention and reduce the burden of CVD.

Thrombocytopenia at CS presentation was associated with worse clinical findings, higher frequencies of complications, and longer stay at the intensive care unit. Also, thrombocytopenia was independently associated with increased 30-day mortality. (Clinical trial registration No. NCT02985008).

The burden of cardiometabolic risk factors among U.S. adults with hypertension has increased overall, with concurrent diabetes and hyperlipidemia now affecting more than 1 in 5. Only one-quarter of adults with hypertension, diabetes, and hyperlipidemia have all 3 conditions controlled-a proportion that has not improved in more than a decade.
Approximately half of pre-diagnosis smokers quit smoking after a cancer diagnosis. Smoking cessation was associated with a 15% reduced risk of dementia. More than 2% of pre-diagnosis non-smokers initiated or relapsed into smoking after a cancer diagnosis. Smoking initiation/relapse was associated with a 29% elevated risk of dementia.
