Professor Hyo-Jin An's research lab specializes in natural product pharmacology, focusing on the therapeutic potential of plant-derived compounds and microbial fermentation products in chronic inflammatory diseases, metabolic disorders, and skin aging. The lab investigates mechanisms underlying anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-obesity, and anti-photoaging effects using both in vitro and in vivo disease models, with an emphasis on identifying bioactive phytochemicals and enhancing their efficacy through fermentation. Current research integrates molecular pharmacology, biochemical assays, and advanced analytical techniques such as HPLC and NMR to validate therapeutic targets and develop functional foods and cosmetics.

Previously, we found that rosmarinic acid (RA) exerted anti-inflammatory activities in a dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis model. Here, we investigated the anti-tumor effects of RA on colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) and the underlying molecular mechanisms. We established an azoxymethane (AOM)/DSS-induced CAC murine model for in vivo studies and used a conditioned media (CM) culture system in vitro. H&E staining, immunohistochemistry, western blot assay, enzyme-linked immunosorbe
Although Aster glehni has been reported to prevent diabetes mellitus, hypercholesterolemia, insomnia, and cardiovascular disease, the anti-inflammatory effect of Aster glehni in colonic tissue remains unclear. In this study, we investigated the anti-inflammatory effects and the underlying molecular mechanism of an ethanol extract of Aster glehni (AG) in mice with dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced colitis. AG significantly attenuated DSS-induced DAI scores, which implied that it suppressed dia
In Korean herbal medicine dandelion (Taraxacum officinale, TO) has been used to improve energy levels and health. However, the effects of TO in experimental models remain unclear. We examined the anti-fatigue and immune-enhancing effects of TO in mice by performing a forced swimming test (FST) and in vitro by using peritoneal macrophages, respectively. After daily oral administration of TO, blood biochemical parameters related to fatigue were measured after the FST. FST immobility time was signi
Ultraviolet (UV) exposure triggers the abnormal production of reactive oxygen (ROS) species and the expression of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) that are responsible for photoaging. Probiotics are widely used in healthcare and for immune enhancement. One probiotic, Lactobacillus buchneri is found in Kimchi. This study was aimed at assessing the anti-photoaging effect of plant extracts fermented with L. buchneri (PELB) to develop functional cosmetics. We investigated the anti-phot
Papain is a proteolytic enzyme present in the leaves, fruits, roots, and latex of the Carica papaya (papaya) plant. Although it exhibits a wide range of activities, there are no reports on the anti-obesity effects of papain. This study examined the anti-obesity effect and obesity-involved anti-inflammatory mechanism of papain in in vivo and in vitro models using high-fat diet (HFD)-induced obese mice and 3T3-L1 preadipocytes. Oral administration of papain reduced HFD-induced weight of the
Phytochemical studies on the constituents of the rhizomes of Imperata cylindrica (Gramineae) were performed using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). We also aimed to search for any biologically active substance capable of inhibiting nitric oxide (NO) formation in lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-activated macrophage 264.7 cells, by testing four compounds isolated from this plant. Four compounds, including a new chromone, isoeugenin, along with ferulic acid, p-coumaric acid, and caffeic acid
Nodakenin, a coumarin isolated from the roots of Angelicae gigas, is effective for treating function control disorders, bacterial infections, pain, diarrhea, vitamin E deficiency, and for relaxation of the uterus. The aim of this study was to investigate the antiallergic related inflammatory effects in phorbol-12-myristate 13-acetate plus calcium ionophore A23187 (PMACI)-stimulated human mast cells (HMC-1) or anaphylactic activity in a mouse model. Nodakenin inhibited the mRNA expression and pro
Aster glehni (AG) is a Korean traditional herb that grows in Ulleungdo Island, Republic of Korea. None of the several reports on AG include a determination of the effect of AG on adipogenesis. The primary aim of this study was to determine whether AG attenuates adipogenesis in mouse 3T3-L1 cells and epididymal fat tissue. AG blocked the differentiation of 3T3-L1 preadipocytes in a concentration-dependent manner and suppressed the expression of adipogenesis-related genes such as PPAR γ , C/EBP α
Apocynin (Apo), an NADPH oxidase (NOX) inhibitor, has been widely used to treat various inflammatory diseases. However, the therapeutic effects of Apo on benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), a multifactorial disease associated with chronic inflammation and hormone imbalance, remain unknown. The link between androgen signaling, reactive oxygen species (ROS), and prostate cell proliferation may contribute to the pathogenesis of BPH; therefore, the aim of this study was to identify the specific sign
Many researchers have argued that Western diet (WD)-induced obesity accelerates inflammation and that inflammation is a link between obesity and colorectal cancer (CRC). This study investigated the effect of WDs on the development and progression of colitis-associated colon cancer (CAC) and the efficacy of the anti-obesity agent orlistat on WD-driven CAC in mice. The results revealed that the WD exacerbated CAC in azoxymethane (AOM)/dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced mice, which showed increas
Studies on natural products that can alleviate the inflammatory response of macrophages caused by endotoxin (lipopolysaccharide) continue. This study investigated the anti-inflammatory activity of baicalin related to macrophage activation caused by lipopolysaccharide (LPS). Baicalin is a flavone glycoside found in plants such as Scutellaria baicalensis and Scutellaria lateriflora belonging to the genus Scutellaria. The multiplex cytokine assay (MCA), Griess reagent assay, fl
