Professor Inhong Song's research lab specializes in environmental and water resources engineering, with a focus on sustainable water management, agricultural water quality, and ecological system modeling. The lab investigates subsurface irrigation systems to minimize microbial contamination in crops, develops advanced remote sensing and AI-based methods for rapid land cover and farmland boundary mapping, and applies hydraulic and water quality modeling to assess ecological habitat suitability and optimize streamflow for aquatic species. The lab integrates field experiments, computational modeling, and innovative data analysis techniques to address critical challenges in water safety, agricultural productivity, and environmental conservation.

This study was conducted to compare subsurface drip irrigation (SDI) with furrow irrigation (FI) in crop contamination with microbial-contaminated water irrigation. Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, and coliphage PRD-1 were added to water used to irrigate cantaloupe, lettuce, and bell pepper. Samples of produce, surface, and subsurface (10cm) soil for each irrigation system were collected on Days 1, 3, 5, 7, 10, and 14 after the application of the study microorganisms. Overall, greater
The boundary extraction of an object from remote sensing imagery has been an important issue in the field of research. The automation of farmland boundary extraction is particularly in demand for rapid updates of the digital farm maps in Korea. This study aimed to develop a boundary extraction algorithm by systematically reconstructing a series of computational and mathematical methods, including the Suzuki85 algorithm, Canny edge detection, and Hough transform. Since most irregular farmlands in
Water quality models based on accurate mixing data at cross junctions are important for estimating concentrations of chemical species in municipal water distribution systems. Recent studies indicate that the instantaneous complete (thus “perfect”) mixing assumption potentially can result in an erroneous prediction of water quality. The present study examines the updated “incomplete” solute mixing model at cross junctions in a network having multiple cross junctions. The model performance in pred
The accurate prediction of solute transport in water distribution systems has become a critical component of efforts aimed at delivering clean drinking water safely to large urban populations. One of the central assumptions that water quality models have traditionally relied upon dictates that, in a four-way junction, two incoming flows of differing quality will mix perfectly to produce two outgoing flows of equal quality, and that such complete mixing occurs irrespective of the specific assembl
Along with global warming, ever intensifying weather events have increased damages to agricultural farms and facilities. The objective of this study was to investigate the spatial distribution and regional characteristics of agricultural damages by extreme weather events. Agricultural disaster statistics provided by the National Emergency Management Agency were summed over for a 13-year period from 1998 to 2010 and used for the spatial analysis. Two indices of damage area ration and property dam
Prompt updates of land cover maps are important, as spatial information of land cover is widely used in many areas. However, current manual digitizing methods are time consuming and labor intensive, hindering rapid updates of land cover maps. The objective of this study was to develop an artificial intelligence (AI) based land cover classification model that allows for rapid land cover classification from high-resolution remote sensing (HRRS) images. The model comprises of three modules: pre-pro
The objectives of this study were to evaluate aquatic habitat suitability considering stream hydraulics as well as water quality and to propose a stream ecological flow rate for Zacco platypus in the Banbyeon Stream of South Korea. Stream water temperature and dissolved oxygen (DO) in addition to streamflow velocity and depth were simulated using the Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) from 2010 to 2020 and then used to estimate weighted usable area (WUA) as the proxy i
Because hydrologic responses of an agricultural watershed are influenced by many natural and man-made factors including pond/reservoir, management practices, and/or irrigation/drainage, strategies of hydrological modeling for the watershed must be case-dependent and thus carefully designed to effectively reflect their roles as critical hydrologic components in simulation processes. In this study, we propose a component-based modeling framework that accommodates a flexible modeling approach to co
Abstract The global efforts on reducing methane (CH 4 ) emissions was emphasized in COP 28 and the potential for improved estimation became feasible through bottom-up data acquisition with advanced remote sensing technology. The objectives of this study were to extract summer rice and winter crop cultivation areas based on satellite images and to incorporate into estimating CH 4 emissions in South Korea for the year 2020. Satellite images of Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 were acquired from European
This study was aimed to characterize non-point source (NPS) pollutant runoff and estimate event mean concentrations (EMCs) from a small rural watershed located at the headwater area of the Gyeongan stream. The study watershed consists of the two major landuse, forest (72 %) and paddy field (28 %). The nine rainfall events ranging from 18.5 to 192.6 mm in amount were monitored in this study. Stream flow was measured at the watershed outlet using a water level gauge, while a number of water sample
As biosolids application to croplands becomes a common practice, potential harm from pathogenic microbes needs to be mitigated for its safe reuse. The objective of this study was to investigate the impacts of tilling treatment on biosolids drying and microbial inactivation during the solar drying process in a semi-arid and temperate region. Solar drying experiments were conducted in sand and gravel dying beds open-to-the-air and under covering structures with biosolids to 20 cm depth from 2004 t
