Professor Jaejoon Lee's research lab focuses on the intersection of rheumatology, metabolic disorders, and systemic inflammation, with a particular emphasis on the pathogenic roles of uric acid, metabolic syndrome, and environmental factors like nicotine in autoimmune and chronic inflammatory diseases. The lab investigates mechanisms linking hyperuricemia, metabolic syndrome, and comorbid conditions such as gout, cardiovascular disease, and lung dysfunction, using large-scale population-based cohort studies and preclinical models. Key research directions include the immunomodulatory effects of nicotine in arthritis, the role of NETosis in disease progression, and the therapeutic potential of agents like Tubastatin A in inflammatory joint diseases. The lab integrates clinical epidemiology with translational immunology to identify modifiable risk factors and novel therapeutic targets in rheumatic and metabolic diseases.

Hyperuricemia is an emerging potential biomarker for metabolic syndrome (MetS) and its complications. This study aimed to investigate the risk factors of hyperuricemia, particularly, the association of hyperuricemia with MetS and general obesity according to sex.
