Professor Jung-Suk Han's research lab specializes in advanced biomaterials and digital dentistry, focusing on the development of zirconia-based composites for dental implants and prosthetic applications, with an emphasis on mechanical performance, biocompatibility, and long-term clinical stability. The lab also pioneers the application of artificial intelligence and deep learning in dental imaging, particularly in automated detection and segmentation of anatomical structures in panoramic and periapical radiographs. Research spans from material science innovations to clinical translation, integrating cutting-edge technologies such as augmented reality and panoptic segmentation for improved diagnostic accuracy and treatment planning.

Augmentation reality technology offers virtual information in addition to that of the real environment and thus opens new possibilities in various fields. The medical applications of augmentation reality are generally concentrated on surgery types, including neurosurgery, laparoscopic surgery and plastic surgery. Augmentation reality technology is also widely used in medical education and training. In dentistry, oral and maxillofacial surgery is the primary area of use, where dental implant plac
ZrO2/Al2O3 composites were prepared by mixing a tetragonal ZrO2, stabilized by 5.31 mol% Y2O3 and 4.45 mol% Nb2O5, and various amounts of Al2O3. Influence of the amount of Al2O3 on strength and toughness and tetragonal phase stability in the composites under autoclave conditions was investigated. In addition, in vitro and in vivo biocompatibility of the composites was examined. The composite, prepared with addition of 20 vol% Al2O3, exhibited the highest strength of 700 MPa and toughness of 8.1
Determining the peri-implant marginal bone level on radiographs is challenging because the boundaries of the bones around implants are often unclear or the heights of the buccal and lingual bone levels are different. Therefore, a deep convolutional neural network (CNN) was evaluated for detecting the marginal bone level, top, and apex of implants on dental periapical radiographs. An automated assistant system was proposed for calculating the bone loss percentage and classifying the bone resorpti
Panoramic radiographs, also known as orthopantomograms, are routinely used in most dental clinics. However, it has been difficult to develop an automated method that detects the various structures present in these radiographs. One of the main reasons for this is that structures of various sizes and shapes are collectively shown in the image. In order to solve this problem, the recently proposed concept of panoptic segmentation, which integrates instance segmentation and semantic segmentation, wa
Alumina-toughened zirconia abutments are likely to exhibit excellent long-term survival in clinical use for fixed restorations. Single tooth replacement with the abutment at the molar region may require special care and extra attention.
The three bacteria proliferated most on the rough titanium surface and least on the smooth zirconia surface. In addition, the proliferation was affected by the bacterial species as well as the surface properties.
Kindlins are focal adhesion proteins that regulate integrin signaling. Although integrin activation is critical for bone development, little is known about the expression and role of kindlins in osteoblasts. We therefore investigated the function of kindlin-2 in osteoblast adhesion, spreading, and proliferation using small interfering RNA. In MC3T3-E1 cells, only kindlin-2 is highly expressed and localizes to focal adhesion. We found that kindlin-2 was involved in integrin activation in MC3T3-E1
