Monodisperse spherical Ni nanoparticles with diameters of 2 nm, 5 nm, and 7 nm were synthesized from the thermal decomposition of a Ni–oleylamine complex. Ni nanocrystal superlattices were generated via the controlled evaporation of solvent (see Figure). The nanoparticles were successfully used as catalysts for the Suzuki coupling reaction, and were readily oxidized to produce NiO nanoparticles.
Knowledge about the synthesis, growth mechanisms, and physical properties of colloidal nanoparticles has been limited by technical impediments. We introduce a method for determining three-dimensional (3D) structures of individual nanoparticles in solution. We combine a graphene liquid cell, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, a direct electron detector, and an algorithm for single-particle 3D reconstruction originally developed for analysis of biological molecules. This method yiel
Direct imaging of nanoparticle solutions by liquid phase transmission electron microscopy has enabled unique in situ studies of nanoparticle motion and growth. In the present work, we report on real-time formation of two-dimensional nanoparticle arrays in the very low diffusive limit, where nanoparticles are mainly driven by capillary forces and solvent fluctuations. We find that superlattice formation appears to be segregated into multiple regimes. Initially, the solvent front drags the nanopar
Recent development of liquid phase transmission electron microscopy (TEM) enables the study of specimens in wet ambient conditions within a liquid cell; however, direct structural observation of biological samples in their native solution using TEM is challenging since low-mass biomaterials embedded in a thick liquid layer of the host cell demonstrate low contrast. Furthermore, the integrity of delicate wet samples is easily compromised during typical sample preparation and TEM imaging. To overc
Nonclassical features of crystallization in solution have been recently identified both experimentally and theoretically. In particular, an amorphous-phase-mediated pathway is found in various crystallization systems as an important route, different from the classical nucleation and growth model. Here, we utilize high-resolution in situ transmission electron microscopy with graphene liquid cells to study amorphous-phase-mediated formation of Ni nanocrystals. An amorphous phase is precipitated in
InP/ZnSe/ZnS quantum dots (QDs) stand as promising candidates for advancing QD-organic light-emitting diodes (QLED), but low emission efficiency due to their susceptibility to oxidation impedes applications. Structural defects play important roles in the emission efficiency degradation of QDs, but the formation mechanism of defects in oxidized QDs has been less investigated. Here, we investigated the impact of diverse structural defects formation on individual QDs and propagation during UV-facil
Li-O2 battery is one of the important next-generation energy storage systems, as it can potentially offer the highest theoretical energy density among battery chemistries reported thus far. However, realization of its high discharge capacity still remains challenging and is hampered by the nature of how the discharge products are formed, causing premature passivation of the air electrode. Redox mediators are exploited to solve this problem, as they can promote the charge transfer from
Active, stable electrocatalysts based on non-precious metals for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) and hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) are critical for the development of cost-effective, efficient renewable energy technologies. Here, Fe/Fe3C-embedded nitrogen-doped carbon was fabricated via pyrolysis of iron-porphyrin-encapsulated mesoporous metal-organic frameworks [PCN-333 (Fe), where "PCN" stands for "porous coordination network"] at 700 °C. The various characterization techniq
Two-dimensional (2D) transition metal dichalcogenide (TMD) layers are unit-cell thick materials with tunable physical properties according to their size, morphology, and chemical composition. Their transition of lab-scale research to industrial-scale applications requires process development for the wafer-scale growth and scalable device fabrication. Herein, we report on a new type of atmospheric pressure chemical vapor deposition (APCVD) process that utilizes colloidal nanoparticles as process-
Most of the previous works on designing accelerated life test plans were concerned with the case where a single stress is employed for acceleration. In this article we develop optimal accelerated life test plans when two stresses are involved with possible interaction between them. The lifetimes of test items are assumed to follow an exponential distribution, the mean of which depends on the stresses according to the generalized Eyring law. A factorial arrangement of test points is considered fo
Shape control is of key importance in utilizing the structure-property relationship of nanocrystals. The high surface-to-volume ratio of nanocrystals induces dynamic surface reactions on exposed facets of nanocrystals, such as adsorption, desorption, and diffusion of surface atoms, all of which are important in overall shape transformation. However, it is difficult to track shape transformation of nanocrystals and understand the underlying mechanism at the level of distinguishing events on indiv
Single-phase formation of active metal oxides on supports has been vigorously pursued in many catalytic applications to suppress undesired reactions and to determine direct structure-property relationships. However, this is difficult to achieve in nanoscale range because the effect of non-uniform metal-support interfaces becomes dominant in the overall catalyst growth, leading to the nucleation of various metastable oxides. Herein, we develop a supported single-phase corundum-Rh2 O<su
Active sites and catalytic activity of heterogeneous catalysts is determined by their surface atomic structures. However, probing the surface structure at an atomic resolution is difficult, especially for solution ensembles of catalytic nanocrystals, which consist of heterogeneous particles with irregular shapes and surfaces. Here, we constructed 3D maps of the coordination number (CN) and generalized CN (CN</m
