Professor Jungyul Sohn's research lab specializes in urban and regional economics, with a focus on spatial analysis, transportation network resilience, and the impact of technology and infrastructure on urban development. The lab investigates how geographic location, accessibility, and information technology shape urban spatial structures and economic activity distribution, particularly in metropolitan regions like Chicago and Korea. It also examines the spatial patterns of resource use—such as water—and the economic consequences of natural disasters on transportation systems. The lab integrates quantitative modeling, spatial econometrics, and accessibility-based indicators to inform place-based urban policy and planning.

This paper analyzes the economic impact of an earthquake on transportation network that contains more detail for the Midwest states. Two aspects of cost are considered in the paper: final demand loss and transport cost increase. The 1812 New Madrid earthquake is used to develop a scenario for the analysis. The modeling system includes a transportation network loss function, a final demand loss function, and an integrated commodity flow model. After running the earthquake scenario, the analysis i
This paper examines the impact of information technology on urban spatial structure in the Chicago region. Urban scientists are challenged to understand in what ways information technology has influenced the distribution of urban economic activities: concentration or dispersion. Using data collected in the Chicago region, orientation of establishments toward the center is tested to separate the impact of locational features of centers from the impact of information technology. The result reveals
This study examines the spatial distribution of manufacturing activities in Korea to introduce spatial distributional aspects to industry classifications. One hundred and sixty two administrative units in mainland K orea with 180 manufacturing sectors were analysed for this purpose. In the main analysis, the spatial distribution and association of individual sectors are examined using concentration and agglomeration measures, and 180 sectors are then classified along with the values of these mea
Although measuring sprawl based on morphology is conceptually simple and easy to implement, it is of limited use for deriving implications for urban planning. However, measuring sprawl based on accessibility enables us to observe the impact of development and establish a customised place‐based policy by examining the spatial variation within the region. This study aims to develop and operationalise accessibility‐based sprawl indicators. For this purpose, it employs two accessibility‐based sprawl
ABSTRACT Accessibility to large cities has been recognised as a significant factor for the growth of small and medium cities. The dependence on large cities is especially strong in the urban system with strong urban hierarchy. Based on this observation, this study attempts to examine the influence of city location in the Korean urban system on the growth of small and medium cities. The result shows that distance from Seoul is significant in explaining the overall urban population growth although
This study explores the spatial pattern of urban water use in the southeastern US using Moran's I and Local Moran statistics, and identifies the factors influencing urban water use quantity using a regression model. The findings suggest that counties with a large quantity of water use are spatially clustered. The regression analysis reveals that the quantity of water use decreases as the water price increases in cities in the light water use group and when a city government manages water in citi
