Professor Jun-Hyuk Lee's research lab specializes in epidemiological and translational studies focusing on the role of oxidative stress, insulin resistance, and lifestyle factors in the development of chronic diseases. The lab investigates biomarkers such as the Oxidative Balance Score (OBS) and insulin resistance indices (e.g., HOMA-IR, METS-IR) to understand their predictive value for hypertension, type 2 diabetes, chronic kidney disease, NAFLD, and cardiovascular diseases. A key research direction involves evaluating the preventive potential of diet and lifestyle interventions, including the impact of electroacupuncture on inflammatory pathways. The lab integrates population-based cohort data with preclinical models to bridge molecular mechanisms with public health outcomes.

Individuals with high OBS are at lower risk of developing HTN. This study suggests that a healthy lifestyle and antioxidant rich diet could be a preventive strategy for HTN.
Oxidative stress is a novel risk factor for chronic kidney disease (CKD). The oxidative balance score (OBS) was developed to represent the overall oxidative balance based on dietary and lifestyle pro-oxidant and antioxidant components. The aim of this study is to verify the relationship between the OBS and the incidence of CKD. Data from 5795 participants without CKD at the baseline survey of the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study were analyzed. Participants were classified into sex-specific O
Mitigating the risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be achieved through the maintenance of a healthy weight, the adoption of a healthy diet, and engaging in regular physical activity. The oxidative balance score (OBS), an integrated measure of pro- and antioxidant exposure conditions, represents an individual's overall oxidative balance status. This study aimed to evaluate the association between OBS and T2DM incidence using data from a large, community-based, prospective cohort study. Da
The METS-IR is superior to the HOMA-IR for the prediction of incident NAFLD and is not inferior to the HOMA-IR for the prediction of prevalent NAFLD. This suggests that the METS-IR can be a more useful insulin resistance index than the HOMA-IR for the early detection and prevention of NAFLD in Korean population.
We investigated the anti-inflammatory effects of electroacupuncture (EA) on carrageenan-induced inflammatory model in association with peripheral and spinal COX-2 expression. EA with 2, 15 and 120 Hz, especially 2 Hz, had significant inhibitory effects on the developing of edema and hyperalgesia, which was measured in 30-min intervals after carrageenan injection. Therefore, we investigated whether the effect of 2 Hz EA on carrageenan-induced edema and hyperalgesia is associated with peripheral a
An increasing HOMA-IR appears to be independently and positively related to incident CVD, all-cause mortality, CVD mortality, and major adverse cardiovascular event mortality. Early lifestyle interventions for individuals with increasing HOMA-IR trend could be a practical strategy to prevent CVD and CVD mortality.
We investigated the association between early elevation of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hsCRP) and cardiovascular disease (CVD) incidence, all-cause mortality, and CVD mortality. We analyzed 6567 participants from the Korean Genome and Epidemiology Study_Ansan_Ansung cohort between 2005 and 2018. The Kaplan-Meier curves and modified Cox regression by Fine and Gray were used to estimate hazard ratios (HRs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for CVD incidence, all-cause mortality, CVD mor
We investigated the effects of aqueous extract from Platycodi radix (AEPR), a traditional drug used to treat acute lung inflammatory disease, on lipopolysaccharide (LPS)-induced inflammation in A549 human cultured airway epithelial cells. Nuclear factor-kappaB (NF-kappaB) and its inhibitory regulator, inhibitory kappaB (I-kappaB), play crucial roles in LPS-induced inflammatory response. We show that LPS-induced nuclear translocation of NF-kappaBp65 is inhibited by AEPR. LPS-induced expression of
We determined the relationships between metabolic score for IR (METS-IR), triglyceride-glucose (TyG) index, and homeostatic model assessment for IR (HOMA-IR) and incident advanced liver fibrosis (ALF) and assessed the abilities of the three IR indicators to predict ALF in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) in adults with NAFLD who were aged 40-69 years old. Among 2218 participants with NAFLD at baseline, the areas under the receiver operating characteristic curve for predict
Older adults with sarcopenic obesity (SO) are at increased risk of adverse health outcomes. It has not been identified which pattern of macronutrient intake is appropriate in relation to SO. We aimed to compare the patterns of macronutrient intake for predicting SO in older adults. Data from a total of 3828 older adults who participated in the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey were analyzed. The one-day 24 h dietary recall method was used to assess macronutrient in
Sarcopenia has attracted interest due to its impact on various health problems. Chronic inflammation is an important contributor to sarcopenia. Thus, we aimed to investigate the association between serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), which is a novel inflammatory marker, and muscle mass. This study included 15,579 adults from the 2008-2011 Korea National Health and Nutrition Survey. Low skeletal muscle mass index (LSMI) was defined as body mass index-adjusted appendicular skeletal muscle mass less
