Professor Moon Jae Chung's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal oncology and pancreatic diseases, with a strong focus on improving outcomes in pancreatic cancer through nutritional assessment, novel stent technologies, and optimized endoscopic interventions. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers such as the Prognostic Nutritional Index (PNI), develops drug-eluting stents for biliary and pancreatic conditions, and explores optimal treatment timing and therapeutic strategies for biliary pancreatitis and autoimmune pancreatitis. The lab also investigates treatment responses and relapse patterns in inflammatory bowel disease, particularly intestinal Behçet’s disease, emphasizing personalized and intensive follow-up care.

Acute pancreatitis is a common diagnosis worldwide, with gallstone disease being the most prevalent cause (50%). The American College of Gastroenterology recommends urgent endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) (within 24 h) for patients with biliary pancreatitis accompanied by cholangitis. Most international guidelines recommend that ERCP be performed within 72 h in patients with biliary pancreatitis and a bile duct obstruction without cholangitis, but the optimal timing for endo
Our study demonstrates that a considerable number of patients experience disease relapse during follow-up despite a high-remission rate after medical treatment for intestinal BD. Careful observation and intensive treatment should be carried out, especially in patients without complete remission after initial treatment, with deep and volcano-shaped ulcers, or with apparent gastrointestinal symptoms at the time of diagnosis.
FOLFIRINOX with RIO showed acceptable toxicity and promising efficacy for GEM-refractory unresectable PC. However, this treatment requires careful observation of treatment-related hematologic toxicities.
Combination therapy of gemcitabine and irinotecan had an efficacy comparable to historic control and can be a viable treatment option. It was well tolerated by patients with advanced BTC.
Endoscopic ultrasound (EUS)-guided tissue acquisition of pancreatic solid tumor requires a strict recommendation for its proper use in clinical practice because of its technical difficulty and invasiveness. The Korean Society of Gastrointestinal Endoscopy (KSGE) appointed a task force to draft clinical practice guidelines for EUS-guided tissue acquisition of pancreatic solid tumor. The strength of recommendation and the level of evidence for each statement were graded according to the Minds Hand

Antibiotic prophylaxis before ERCP in patients with biliary obstruction resulted in a significantly lower risk of infectious complications, especially cholangitis, than placebo ( ClinicalTrials.gov trial number NCT02958059).
An association between obesity and unfavorable outcomes for various types of malignancy has been established. Nevertheless, the impact of visceral obesity (VO) on outcomes in pancreatic cancer is still unknown and controversial. The aim of this study was to uncover an association between VO and pancreatic cancer outcomes. We retrospectively reviewed 499 patients with pancreatic cancer who were diagnosed and treated in Severance Hospital from January 2006 to December 2011. Compared to the low-VO
Dickkopf-related protein 1 (DKK-1) has a diagnostic and prognostic value in various malignant tumors. We investigated the diagnostic and prognostic performance of DKK-1 in combination with carbohydrate antigen 19-9 (CA 19-9) in cholangiocarcinoma (CCC) patients. Serum DKK-1 levels were measured using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve, area under ROC (AUROC) analyses, Kaplan-Meier method, and Cox proportional hazard model were used to evaluate th
Treatment outcomes of EUS-guided drainage using a novel LAMS were feasible despite the significantly high proportion of WON. The LAMS allowed acceptable treatment outcomes for EUS-guided drainage.
Preoperative concurrent chemoradiotherapy with S-1 and cisplatin is feasible and safe, and could offer an improved chance of tumor regression and curative resection in patients with locally advanced gastric cancer. Further trials with larger numbers of patients are warranted.
