About the Lab
Professor Ock Joo Kim's research lab focuses on bioethics, medical professionalism, and end-of-life care in East Asia, with a particular emphasis on the ethical, legal, and societal dimensions of healthcare decision-making. The lab explores the development of medical ethics frameworks in Korea and Japan, including national guidelines on palliative care, life-sustaining treatment, and public health ethics during infectious disease outbreaks. It also investigates historical aspects of Western medicine's introduction and medical research under colonial rule, especially in Korea and Japan, highlighting issues of medical autonomy, self-determination, and institutional responsibility. The lab’s work bridges historical analysis with contemporary bioethical challenges, aiming to strengthen ethical standards in clinical and public health practice.

15In Korea, the Hospice, Palliative Care, and Life-sustaining Treatment Decision-making Act was enacted in February 2016 in order to ensure that the patient's self-determination in end-of-life care processes is respected. To enhance physicians' understanding of this act and to provide proper criteria for medical judgment in variety of clinical settings, consensus guidelines were published in November 2016. In this article, the characteristics of these guidelines and related issues regarding the de
Prompted by an increased interest of both research participants and the patient advocacy community in obtaining information about research outcomes and on the use of their biological samples; the international community has begun to debate the emergence of an ethical 'duty' to return research results to participants. Furthermore, the use of new technologies (e.g., whole-genome and -exome sequencing) has revealed both genetic data and incidental findings with possible clinical significance. These
Medical research during the Japanese Colonial Period became systematic and active after the Keijo Imperial University Medical School was established in 1926. Various kinds of research were conducted there including pharmacological, physiological, pathological and parasitological research. The Keijo Imperial University was give a mission to study about Korea. Urgent topics for medical research included control of infectious diseases, hygiene and environmental health that might have affected colon
Western medicine began to be introduced to Japan since late 16th century. Japanese encounter with Western medicine centered on Dejima in Nagasaki in the seventeenth and eighteenth century and the initial process of introduction was gradual and slow. In the mid-nineteenth century, facing threats from Western countries, Tokugawa bakufu(幕府) asked Dutch naval surgeon, J. L. C. Pompe van Meerdervoort to teach western medicine at the Kaigun Denshujo naval academy in Nagasaki. The government also suppo
Ethical considerations are essential in planning for and responding to outbreaks of infectious diseases. During the outbreak of Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-CoV) in the Republic of Korea in 2015, serious challenges emerged regarding important ethical issues, such as transparency and the protection of privacy. The development of bioethics in Korea has been influenced by individualistic perspectives applied in clinical contexts, leading to a paucity of ethical perspectives re
Medical ethics, autonomy, and self-regulation form the core of medical professionalism. Therefore, codes and guidelines regarding ethics are key documents that demonstrate the identity of physicians as a professional group in a society. In Korea, foreign declarations such as the Hippocratic Oath and the Geneva Declaration have been translated and introduced, while medical ethics guidelines have been introduced from developed countries. In 1961, 1965, and 1979, the Code of Medical Ethics was crea
Background: The Declaration of Helsinki is the first self-regulatory professional standard developed by physicians for guiding medical research. Revised ten times, most recently in October 2024, it continues to evolve as a living document for medical research ethics. This study examined the key components and significance of the most recent revisions.Current Concepts: The Declaration of Helsinki was initially developed in response to unethical research conducted by Nazi doctors during World War
Border controls and social distancing have proven effective in containing the spread of COVID-19, but the current pandemic will not end until herd immunity is achieved through the widespread use of vaccines. Given the importance of vaccines in overcoming this global health crisis, and the current imbalance between their supply and demand, ethical questions arise concerning how COVID-19 vaccines should be distributed. This article argues that the guiding objectives for the distribution of COVID-1
In October 2024, the World Medical Association's Declaration of Helsinki (DoH) underwent comprehensive updates that incorporated feedback from global experts and stakeholders. The revised DoH continues to serve as a cornerstone for international and national regulations on medical research ethics. This paper aims to delve into the 2024 amendments to DoH and assesses their impact on South Korea's Bioethics and Safety Act (Bioethics Act). This paper analyses the congruences and gaps between the re
In response to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, several countries introduced mandatory vaccination policies to increase vaccination rates. These policies were controversial because they were seen, at least by some, as coercive measures that violated individual rights and freedoms. This article examines some of the arguments that were given, both for and against, the mandatory vaccination policies that certain countries implemented in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. The four arguments for vaccin
