Through this work, we have elucidated the mechanism of hydroxyl radicals (OH(•)) generation and its life time measurements in biosolution. We observed that plasma-initiated ultraviolet (UV) photolysis were responsible for the continues generation of OH(•) species, that resulted in OH(•) to be major reactive species (RS) in the solution. The density and lifetime of OH(•) species acted inversely proportional to each other with increasing depth inside the solution. The cause of increased lifetime o
In view the of wide scope of structural information of biomolecules in biocompatible ionic liquids (ILs) in various applications including chemical and biochemical, it is essential to study the productive preferential interactions between biological macromolecules and biocompatible ILs. We have therefore explored the stability and activity of α-chymotrypsin (CT) in the presence of five ILs from different families, such as triethyl ammonium acetate (TEAA), triethyl ammonium phosphate (TEAP) from
Nanomaterials such as carbon nanotubes (CNTs) have been used as an excellent material for catalysis, separation, adsorption and disinfection processes. CNTs have grabbed the attention of the scientific community and they have the potential to adsorb most of the organic compounds from water. Unlike, reverse osmosis (RO), nanofiltration (NF) and ultrafiltration (UF) membranes aligned CNT membranes can act as high-flow desalination membranes. CNTs provide a relatively safer electrode solution for b
Enzymes are very sensitive and highly complex systems, exhibiting a substantial degree of structural variability in their folded state. In the presence of cosolvents, the fluctuations among vast numbers of folded and unfolded conformations occur via many different pathways, and alternatively, enzymes can be stabilized or destabilized. To understand the contribution of osmolytes and denaturants on the stabilization, related to the associated structural changes and enzyme activity of alpha-chymotr
Plasma medicine is an upcoming research area that has attracted the scientists to explore more deeply the utility of plasma. So, apart from the treating biomaterials and tissues with plasma, we have studied the effect of soft plasma with different feeding gases such as Air, N2 and Ar on modification of biomolecules. Hence, in this work we have used the soft plasma on biomolecules such as proteins ((Hemoglobin (Hb) and Myoglobin (Mb)), calf thymus DNA and amino acids. The structural changes or st
Purified water supply for human use, agriculture and industry is the major global priority nowadays. The advanced oxidation process based on atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma (NTP) has been used for purification of wastewater, although the underlying mechanisms of degradation of organic pollutants are still unknown. In this study we employ two needle-type atmospheric pressure non-thermal plasma jets, i.e., indirect (ID-APPJ) and direct (D-APPJ) jets operating at Ar feed gas, for the treatm
The stability of proteins under co-solvent conditions is dependant on the nature of the co-solvent; the co-solvent can alter a protein's properties and structural effects through bimolecular interactions between its functional groups and co-solvent particles. Ionic liquids (ILs) represent a rather diverse class of co-solvents that are combinations of different ions, which are liquids at or close to room temperature. To quantify the bimolecular interactions of protein functional groups with bioco
To understand the molecular interactions between N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) with two families of ionic liquids (ILs), we have measured thermophysical properties such as densities (rho) and ultrasonic sound velocities (u) over the whole composition range at 25 degrees C under atmospheric pressure. The excess molar volume (V(E)) and the deviation in isentropic compressibilities (DeltaK(s)) were predicted using these properties as a function of the concentration of IL. These results are fitted to
A mild and efficient catalytic method has been developed to synthesize 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones in high yield by one-pot three component Biginelli condensation in the presence of triethylammonium acetate (TEAA) which acts as catalyst/reaction medium. Further, we have studied the antioxidant and antibacterial activities of these synthesized 3,4-dihydropyrimidinones. All the synthesized compounds reveal the significant antioxidant properties, these properties have been studied using 1,1-diphenyl-2
We present a biocompatible ionic liquid, triethyl ammonium acetate (TEAA), that attenuates the denaturation action of a non-ionic chaotrope, urea, on the industrially relevant proteolytic enzyme α-chymotrypsin.
The presence of salts in biological solution can affect the activity of the reactive species (RS) generated by plasma, and so they can also have an influence on the plasma-induced sterilization. In this work, we assess the influence that diethylammonium dihydrogen phosphate (DEAP), an ionic liquid (IL), and sodium chloride (NaCl), an ionic salt (IS), have on the structural changes in hemoglobin (Hb) in the presence of RS generated using dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma in the presence o
In recent years, plasma has proved to have great promise in the fields of chemistry, biology, physics, biotechnological and medical sciences. In this review, we discuss plasma versatility and applicability in various areas, such as interactions with biomolecules, biomedical treatments, chemical synthesis, removal of volatile organic compounds, electrochemical reactions, nanoscience, surface modifications, food engineering and water purification applications. Specially, we discuss how we can incr
The rapid growth in world population brings with it the need for improvement in the current technology for water purification, in order to provide adequate potable water to everyone. Although an advanced oxidation process has been used to purify wastewater, its action mechanism is still not clear. Therefore, in the present study we treat dye-polluted water with gamma rays and dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) plasma. We study the wastewater treatment efficiency of gamma rays and DBD plasma at d
In this paper, we have examined the effect of ammonium and imidazolium based ionic liquids (ILs) on the stability and activity of proteolytic enzyme α-chymotrypsin (CT) in the presence of cold atmospheric pressure plasma jet (APPJ). The present work aims to illustrate the state of art implementing the combined action of ILs and APPJ on the enzyme stability and activity. Our circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence and enzyme activity results of CT have revealed that buffer and all studied ILs {trie
