Professor Sang Hui Chu's research lab focuses on metabolic health, inflammation, and lifestyle-related diseases, with a particular emphasis on obesity, metabolic syndrome, and cardiovascular risk factors. The lab investigates biomarkers such as chemerin and adiponectin in relation to systemic inflammation and insulin resistance, while also exploring dietary patterns—particularly the Mediterranean diet—through culturally adapted tools like the Korean-MEDAS. Additional research directions include medication adherence, patient-reported outcomes in heart failure, and the molecular mechanisms of chronic infections like *H. pylori* in gastric cell apoptosis. The lab integrates clinical, nutritional, and molecular approaches to improve preventive and personalized healthcare strategies.

Obesity and metabolic syndrome (MetS) are considered chronic inflammatory states. Chemerin, a novel adipokine, may play an important role in linking MetS and inflammation. We investigated the association of chemerin with inflammatory markers and with characteristics of MetS in apparently healthy overweight and obese adults. An awareness of CTs and the perceptions toward CTs were associated with general public willingness to participate in a CT. Findings from this study can be used in planning outreach and recruitment strategies, and to understand the predictors of CT participation.
The MLHFQ was better able to differentiate sex, comorbidity, and functional status. Further studies are needed to implement cost-effective nursing interventions for patients with CHF to improve their HRQOL.

When medication adherence was defined as taking warfarin according to medical advice (frequency, dosage, time, and precautions), 56 (27.5%) of 204 respondents were adherent. The adherent group had a greater understanding about warfarin than the nonadherent group as measured by 10 survey items (7.20 ± 1.70 vs 6.56 ± 1.84; P < .05) and had significantly higher self-efficacy (P < .000). Our results indicate that high burden from symptoms might be associated with lower QoL in GI cancer survivors, and higher economic burden from cancer treatment was associated with lower QoL. These results suggest that symptom management and support for economic difficulties should be included in the strategies to enhance the QoL of GI cancer survivors.
