Professor Sang Kyu Park's research lab focuses on molecular parasitology, ion channel biology, and the pathophysiology of neurological and metabolic disorders. The lab investigates the molecular mechanisms of anthelmintic drugs like praziquantel, identifying novel drug targets such as the schistosome TRP channel SmTRPM_PZQ. It also explores lipid signaling in vascular function, particularly epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) and their G protein-coupled receptor GPR40, and contributes to plant melatonin biosynthesis through enzymatic characterization of N-acetylserotonin methyltransferase. Additionally, the lab engages in clinical translational research, including prognostic scoring in neurocritical care and molecular genetics of oculocutaneous albinism in Asian populations.

Molecular martensitic materials are an emerging class of smart materials with enormous tunability in physicochemical properties, attributed to the tailored molecular and crystal structures through molecular design. This class of materials exhibits ultrafast and reversible structural transitions in response to thermal and mechanical stimuli, which underlies fascinating properties such as thermoelasticity, superelasticity, ferroelasticity, and shape memory effect. These dynamic properties are not
The anthelmintic drug praziquantel (PZQ) is used to treat schistosomiasis, a neglected tropical disease that affects over 200 million people worldwide. PZQ causes Ca2+ influx and spastic paralysis of adult worms and rapid vacuolization of the worm surface. However, the mechanism of action of PZQ remains unknown even after 40 years of clinical use. Here, we demonstrate that PZQ activates a schistosome transient receptor potential (TRP) channel, christened <i>Sm</i>TRPMPZQ, p
Abstract A new high‐performing small molecule n‐channel semiconductor based on diketopyrrolopyrrole (DPP), 2,2′‐(5,5′‐(2,5‐bis(2‐ethylhexyl)‐3,6‐dioxo‐2,3,5,6‐tetrahydropyrrolo[3,4‐c]pyrrole‐1,4‐diyl)bis(thiophene‐5,2‐diyl))bis(methan‐1‐yl‐1‐ylidene)dimalononitrile (DPP‐T‐DCV), is successfully synthesized. The frontier molecular orbitals in this designed structure are elaborately tuned by introducing a strong electron‐accepting functionality (dicyanovinyl). The well‐defined lamellar structures o
Endothelium-derived epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs) have numerous vascular activities mediated by G protein-coupled receptors. Long-chain free fatty acids and EETs activate GPR40, prompting us to investigate the role of GPR40 in some vascular EET activities. 14,15-EET, 11,12-EET, arachidonic acid, and the GPR40 agonist GW9508 increase intracellular calcium concentrations in human GPR40-overexpressing HEK293 cells (EC50 = 0.58 ± 0.08 μm, 0.91 ± 0.08 μm, 3.9 ± 0.06 μm, and 19 ± 0.37 nm
Like silicon, single crystals of organic semiconductors are pursued to attain intrinsic charge transport properties. However, they are intolerant to mechanical deformation, impeding their application in flexible electronic devices. Such contradictory properties, namely exceptional molecular ordering and mechanical flexibility, are unified in this work. We found that bis(triisopropylsilylethynyl)pentacene (TIPS-P) crystals can undergo mechanically induced structural transitions to exhibit superel
A series of indolo[3,2‐b]indole (IDID) derivatives comprising the core unit of N , N ‐dihexyl‐IDID with different aromatic and aliphatic substituents at 2‐ and 7‐position are designed and synthesized to construct high‐performance organic semiconductors by different processing routes. Structure‐property relationship of the derivatives is comprehensively studied in terms of their photophysical, electrochemical, structural, and electrical characteristics. IDID derivatives are either evaporated in v
Rice (Oryza sativa) N-acetylserotonin methyltransferase (osASMT), the last enzyme in the synthesis of melatonin, was expressed in Escherichia coli and purified. We then characterized its enzyme kinetics, which is the first time this has been performed in plants. Purified glutathione S-transferase (GST)-fused recombinant osASMT (GST-osASMT) and GST-free osASMT showed specific enzyme activities of 6.6 and 12.6 pmol/min per mg protein, respectively. When evaluated by the Lineweaver-Burk equation, G
We study the predictive power of Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHE II) and Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPS II) in neurosurgical intensive care unit (ICU) patients. Retrospective investigation was conducted on 672 consecutive ICU patients during the last 2 yr. Data were collected during the first 24 hours of admission and analyzed to calculate predicted mortality. Mortality predicted by two systems was compared and, multivariate analyses were then performed for
The anterior clinoidectomy group showed a more tortuous course of intracranial ICA around the ACP than the nonclinoidectomy group. Therefore, measurement of the distal ICA angle is helpful in predicting the necessity of anterior clinoidectomy.
