Professor Sangmin Lee's research lab specializes in biomedical engineering and neurotechnology, focusing on innovative solutions for neurodegenerative diseases and sensory restoration. Key research directions include enhancing neurogenesis for Alzheimer’s disease therapy using natural compounds like hesperidin, developing wearable biosensors for real-time gesture recognition, and advancing retinal prosthetic systems through flexible microelectrode arrays integrated with nanowire FET switches. The lab also investigates drug delivery systems for ocular diseases, particularly using nanocarriers to improve the efficacy and tolerability of diabetes medications.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is an irreversible neurodegenerative disease characterized by memory and cognitive impairments. Neurogenesis, which is related to memory and cognitive function, is reduced in the brains of patients with AD. Therefore, enhancing neurogenesis is a potential therapeutic strategy for neurodegenerative diseases, including AD. Hesperidin (HSP), a bioflavonoid found primarily in citrus plants, has anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and neuroprotective effects. The objective of thi
Recording human gestures from a wearable sensor produces valuable information to implement control gestures or in healthcare services. The wearable sensor is required to be small and easily worn. Advances in miniaturized sensor and materials research produces patchable inertial measurement units (IMUs). In this paper, a hand gesture recognition system using a single patchable six-axis IMU attached at the wrist via recurrent neural networks (RNN) is presented. The IMU comprises IC-based electroni
The objective of this study was to characterize the epidemiology of using potentially inappropriate medications associated with dementia exacerbation (DPIMs) in elderly outpatients with dementia. Electronic medical records were retrospectively reviewed for geriatric patients with dementia who were prescribed at least one medication in 2016 at a tertiary, university-affiliated hospital. The 2015 Beers criteria were used to define DPIMs. Logistic regression was performed to identify factors associ
Broad-band analog and digital reflection-type phase shifters (RTPSs), showing constant phase shift over 1:3 bandwidth, have been developed using microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) technology. Two-unit RTPSs centered at two different frequencies have been cascaded to achieve flat phase responses over a wide frequency band. Each phase shifter uses air-gap overlay coplanar-waveguide couplers for low-loss 3-dB coupling and bridge-type MEMS capacitors for reflective terminations. The fabricated an
Diabetes mellitus (DM) is the most prevalent cause of diabetic retinopathy (DRP). DRP has been recognized for a long time as a microvascular disease. Many drugs were used to treat DRP, including vildagliptin (VLD). In addition to its hypoglycemic effect, VLD minimizes ocular inflammation and improves retinal blood flow for individuals with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Nevertheless, VLD can cause upper respiratory tract infections, diarrhea, nausea, hypoglycemia, and poor tolerability when taken ora
In this paper, a novel microelectrode array integrated with nanowire field-effect transistor (FET) switches is developed for retinal prosthetic systems. Retinal prosthetic systems require many electrodes (generally more than several hundreds) and this paper presents a novel method of integrating silicon nanowire-FET switches with microelectrodes that can significantly reduce wiring complexity. Also, in order to fit the curvature of an eyeball, the silicon nanowire FETs are transferred to a flexi
To optimize tumor targetability of nanosized liposomes for application as drug carriers, various liposomes are prepared by incorporating different amounts (10, 30, and 50 wt%) of cationic, anionic, and PEGylated lipids into neutral lipid. In vivo near-infrared fluorescence images reveal that PEG-PE/PC liposomes display high tumor accumulation in tumor-bearing mice, while large amounts of DOTAP/PC liposomes are rapidly captured in the liver, resulting in poor tumor accumulation. These results dem
Silicon nanowires are widely used for sensing applications due to their outstanding mechanical, electrical, and optical properties. However, one of the major challenges involves introducing silicon-nanowire arrays to a specific layout location with reproducible and controllable dimensions. Indeed, for integration with microscale structures and circuits, a monolithic wafer-level process based on a top-down silicon-nanowire array fabrication method is essential. For sensors in various electromecha
Retinal degenerative diseases result in a progressive degeneration of photoreceptors in the retina and eventually lead to complete blindness. In this study, we develop a novel silicon nanowire photodetector on a flexible substrate to replace the function of photoreceptors on the retina and restore vision for the blind. An extremely high surfaceto-volume-ratio characteristic of the nanowire enables the development of highly sensitive photonic sensors. Therefore, a nanowire-based photodetector can
Most fungal bone and joint infections (arthritis) are caused by Mucormycosis (<i>Mucor indicus</i>). These infections may be difficult to treat and may lead to chronic bone disorders and disabilities, thus the use of new antifungal materials in bone disorders is vital, particularly in immunocompromised individuals, such as those who have contracted coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Herein, we reported for the first time the preparation of nitrogen-doped carbon quantum dots (N/CQDs) and a nitr
In order to provide high-quality visual information to patients who have implanted retinal prosthetic devices, the number of microelectrodes should be large. As the number of microelectrodes is increased, the dimensions of each microelectrode must be decreased, which in turn results in an increased microelectrode interface impedance and decreased injection current dynamic range. In order to improve the trade-off envelope between the number of microelectrodes and the current injection characteris
Technological advances in wireless communications, miniaturized sensors, and low-power electronics have made it possible to implement integrated wireless body area networks (WBANs). These developments enable the applications of wireless wearable systems for diagnosis, health monitoring, rehabilitation, and dependency care. Across the current range of commercial wearable devices, the products are not firmly fixed to the human body. To minimize data error caused by movement of the human body and t
A low-voltage bandgap reference (BGR) circuit is designed and fabricated in a 90 nm CMOS technology. To mitigate error resulting from the mismatch in temperature dependency of the current in the output current mirror device and that of the BGR core, an output-regulated current mirror is incorporated. Experimental results show that the output voltage is 497.2 mV at 25°C with a temperature coefficient of 28.3 ppm/°C between −40°C and 80°C. The circuit occupies 0.0337 mm2 and dissipates 276.6 pW wi
