Professor Sei Yeul Oh's research lab specializes in ophthalmic imaging and neuro-ophthalmology, focusing on the structural and functional changes in the retina and optic nerve associated with ocular diseases. The lab investigates the role of retinal layer thickness, microvascular changes detected by OCT-A, and hormonal influences—particularly age at menarche—on the development and progression of myopia. They also explore drug-induced optic neuropathies, especially those related to immunosuppressive agents like tacrolimus, aiming to uncover underlying mechanisms and improve prognostic assessment. Their work integrates advanced imaging techniques with clinical epidemiology to identify early biomarkers and risk factors for visual system disorders.

Pulley instability, resulting in EOM sideslip during ductions, occurs in some cases of incomitant strabismus. Resultant patterns of strabismus may depend on static pulley positions, pulley instability, and coexisting globe translation that alters pulley locations relative to the globe. Translational instability of pulleys and the globe could produce abnormalities in actions of otherwise normal EOMs, and connective tissue disorders causing these instabilities should be considered as potential cau
The microvasculature of the RPC network was related to the CSVD burden. However, the RNFL thickness did not reflect cerebral neurodegeneration. Noninvasive and rapid acquisition of the OCTA image might have the potential to be used as a screening tool to detect CSVD.
Primate EOMs contain substantial numbers of OL fibers. Numerical similarity of GL fibers is consistent with similar mechanical loading on each of the four rectus EOMs, as required to rotate the globe. Numerical dissimilarity of OL fibers correlates with varying mechanical loading because of varying elasticities of connective tissues onto which these fibers insert.
These data, obtained using spectral-domain optical coherence tomography, reveal differences between amblyopic and fellow eyes in the thickness of some retinal layers, including a notable difference in the ganglion cell layer plus inner plexiform layer.
The prevalence and incidence estimates of NAION are comparable with those of Caucasians. These detailed estimates could promote understanding of the disease's pathophysiology and allow for appropriate planning within the healthcare system.
Orbital layers of human rectus EOMs have significantly more muscular vessels than the global layers and stain earlier after intravenous bolus injection of paramagnetic MRI contrast. These findings suggest higher and even more rapid blood flow in the orbital layers that may correlate with greater metabolic activity. Greater blood flow is consistent with more sustained mechanical loading of the orbital than the global layer.
We investigated the characteristics of children with peripapillary hyperreflective ovoid mass-like structures (PHOMS) and evaluated the associated risk factors. This cross-sectional study included 132 eyes of 66 children with PHOMS and 92 eyes of 46 children without PHOMS (controls) who were assessed by disc enhanced-depth image spectral-domain (SD) optical coherence tomography (OCT). Univariable and multivariable logistic analyses were performed to evaluate risk factors associated with presence
Later age at menarche is associated with a decreased risk of moderate and high myopia. The effects of female sex hormones on ocular structures and growth spurts may mediate this relationship between age at menarche and myopia.
We described a structure-function relationship between the retinal changes that occur in early EON and vision recovery. Temporal GCIPL could be used to predict vision recovery at 12 months after stoppage of EMB. Careful evaluation for GCIPL damage is required for visual prognosis in early EON.
Structural degeneration referred to as microvascular alterations measured by OCT-A and preoperative VF defects were associated with worse postoperative VF prognosis. Parafoveal and peripapillary vessel densities may serve as a sensitive, structural prognostic factors in the preoperative judgement of chiasmal compression.
The aim of this study was to investigate extraocular muscle (EOM) volume and cross-sectional area using computed tomography (CT), and to determine the relationship between EOM size and the vertical angle of deviation in thyroid eye disease (TED). Twenty-nine TED patients (58 orbits) with vertical strabismus were enrolled in the study. All patients underwent complete ophthalmic examination including prism, alternate cover, and Krimsky tests. Orbital CT scans were also performed on each patient. D
The aims of this study were 1) To evaluate retinal nerve fiber layer (fRNFL) thickness and ganglion cell layer plus inner plexiform layer (GCIPL) thickness at the fovea in eyes affected with traumatic optic neuropathy (TON) compared with contralateral normal eyes, 2) to further evaluate these thicknesses within 3 weeks following trauma (defined as "early TON"), and 3) to investigate the relationship between these retinal layer thicknesses and visual function in TON eyes. Twenty-nine patients wit
