Professor Seong Soo Jeon's research lab focuses on urological oncology and minimally invasive urological surgery, with a strong emphasis on improving treatment outcomes for bladder cancer and ureteral stones. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms of drug resistance, particularly in cisplatin-treated bladder cancer, and explores the synergistic effects of natural compounds like curcumin in enhancing apoptosis through ROS and ERK signaling pathways. In endourology, the lab evaluates advanced lithotripsy techniques such as holmium:YAG laser lithotripsy and develops strategies for optimal stent placement to reduce complications. The lab also compares surgical approaches like laparoscopic and robotic-assisted radical prostatectomy, highlighting improvements in postoperative recovery and quality of life.

Resistance of bladder cancer to cisplatin is a major obstacle to successful treatment. In the current study, we investigated the apoptotic effects of curcumin and cisplatin co-treatment in 253J-Bv(p53 wild-type) and T24(p53 mutant) bladder cancer. We found that curcumin and cisplatin co-treatment primarily targets reactive oxygen species(ROS) and extracellular regulated kinase(ERK) signaling during the apoptosis induction in bladder cancer. Holmium:YAG lithotripsy was associated with shorter operation time and postoperative hospitalization period. These data also suggest that holmium:YAG lithotripsy was safe and more effective than Lithoclast lithotripsy in the aspect of immediate stone free rate. We believe that holmium:YAG laser is an excellent treatment modality for managing ureteral calculi.
Determination of stent length according to patient height does not correlate well with the length needed for endoscopic procedures. Direct measurement of the ureteral length is easy and minimizes stent-associated complications and stent migration.
LRP and RALRP performed by a single surgeon yielded similar results in terms of safety and oncological outcomes. More favorable outcomes were noted in operating time, pain NRS and catheter duration, as well as urinary continence recovery time. Therefore, RALRP showed more favorable components in terms of postoperative quality of life than LRP.
The ALA-based fluorescence cystoscopy technique is a safe and simple procedure that enhances the detection of flat and papillary urothelial neoplasms. Moreover, it will be able to provide useful information that will enable proper staging and appropriate further treatment.
