Professor Seong-Woo Kim's research lab specializes in biomedical and materials science, focusing on retinal diseases and advanced polymer nanocomposites. The lab investigates ocular pathologies such as polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy, central serous chorioretinopathy, and choroidal metastasis, with an emphasis on therapeutic interventions like photodynamic therapy and targeted drug combinations. In parallel, the lab develops high-performance barrier films using ethylene-vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymers and organically modified nanoclays, aiming to enhance food packaging materials through nanocomposite engineering. The integration of clinical ophthalmology with materials innovation defines the lab’s interdisciplinary approach.
Figures are computed from collected data and may differ slightly.
The choroid was thicker in eyes with polypoidal choroidal vasculopathy or central serous chorioretinopathy than in control or age-related maculopathy groups.
Abstract For the application of single‐layer food packaging films with improved barrier properties, an attempt was made to prepare ethylene‐vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer‐based nanocomposite films by incorporation of organically modified montmorillonite nanoclays via a two‐step mixing process and solvent cast method. The highly intercalated tactoids coexisted with exfoliated clay nanosheets, and the extent of intercalation and exfoliation depended significantly on the level of clay loadings, whi
Abstract Using the biaxially oriented film process, polypropylene (PP)/ethylene‐vinyl alcohol copolymer (EVOH) blends with an improved barrier property could be obtained by generating a laminar structure of the dispersed phase in the matrix phase. This laminar morphology, induced by biaxial orientation, was found to result in a significant increase in the oxygen barrier property of PP/EVOH (85/15) blends by about 10 times relative to the pure PP. In this study, compatibility in the PP/EVOH blend
A significant association between shift work and increases in inflammatory markers was confirmed. Because chronic low-grade inflammation plays an important role in the development of cardiovascular diseases, regular follow-up of inflammatory markers as a marker of cardiovascular diseases in shift workers may serve as an early indicator in predicting the effects of shift work on health.
Combining intravitreal bevacizumab and oral erlotinib could be another treatment option for patients with choroidal metastasis of NSCLC.
Retinal pigment epithelial tears may occur after photodynamic therapy (PDT) in various diseases. The authors report a case of a retinal pigment epithelial tear after half light intensity (300 mW/cm2) PDT in a large serous pigment epithelial detachment associated with chronic atypical central serous chorioretinopathy. A 52-year-old woman with a large serous pigment epithelial detachment associated with chronic atypical central serous chorioretinopathy in the left eye received her first PDT treatm
For the application of high gas barrier coatings on polymeric film, ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer-based nanocomposites were prepared by the incorporation of two different graphene oxide (GrO) nanosheets with high and low levels of chemical functionalization via a solution blending method. We attempted the evaluation of compatibility between EVOH with amphiphilic nature and GrO dispersed in the nanocomposite by investigating the effect of the degree of functionalization of GrO on the mo
The visual function of eyes with resolved central serous chorioretinopathy was suboptimal and was better explained when various parameters showing retinal status were combined and interpreted together.
Androgens remain a common treatment for certain type of anemia, based upon its myelostimulating effects; however, it has not been established whether androgens affect apoptosis of hematopoietic progenitor cells (HPCs). We investigated the effects of the androgens, such as testosterone, 5beta-dihydrotestosterone (5-DHT), and oxymetholone, on apoptosis of normal hematopoietic progenitor cells in vitro. Androgens did not rescue normal bone marrow (BM) CD34+ cells and colony-forming cells (CFCs), ot
Chronic MH has features distinct from those of acute symptomatic MH on optical coherence tomography. These findings provide useful insight for the differentiation of chronic MH from acute MH.
Transient hypotony frequently developed after silicone oil removal, and most cases recovered within 1 week postoperatively. Patients with a long axial length had increased odds of developing transient hypotony after silicone oil removal.
