Professor Solmoi Park's research lab specializes in sustainable construction materials, with a focus on alkali-activated materials (AAMs) such as slag and fly ash cements. The lab investigates the durability and environmental interactions of these materials, particularly their resistance to carbonation under elevated CO₂ conditions. Using advanced analytical techniques like solid-state NMR spectroscopy, the lab explores the molecular-level evolution of aluminosilicate gels during carbonation, aiming to enhance the long-term performance and sustainability of AAMs. The research also examines the role of key oxides like MgO in mitigating carbonation rates, contributing to the development of low-carbon, durable construction solutions.

The present study investigated aluminosilicate gel in alkali-activated fly ash exposed to a CO2-rich environment by means of NMR spectroscopy. The alkali-activated fly ash was exposed to an atmospheric CO2 concentration of 10% after curing at 80 °C initially for 24 h. Under high concentrations of CO2, highly reactive components Na and Al, which completely reacted within the first few hours, were unaffected by carbonation, while Si, with relatively slower reactivity, behaved differently.
