About the Lab
Professor Sung Bae Park's research lab focuses on spinal surgery and orthopedic regenerative medicine, with a particular emphasis on osteoporosis-related spinal disorders and surgical outcomes in elderly patients. The lab investigates bone metabolism, including the role of osteoclasts and osteoblasts in spinal fusion, and explores anabolic versus anti-resorptive therapies to improve surgical success in osteoporotic patients. It also conducts preclinical studies using animal models, such as bilateral ovariectomy-induced osteopenic rats, to evaluate bone health and surgical interventions. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical research on degenerative spinal conditions, examining surgical trends, reoperation rates, and the efficacy of minimally invasive techniques.

15The prevalence of osteoporosis has been increasing globally. Recently surgical indications for elderly patients with osteoporosis have been increasing. However, only few strategies are available for osteoporotic patients who need spinal fusion. Osteoporosis is a result of negative bone remodeling from enhanced function of the osteoclasts. Endovascular therapy can be successfully used as a primary treatment for the majority of patients with spinal DAVFs. Although it is difficult to perform in some patients, endovascular embolization should be the primary treatment of choice for spinal DAVF.
Whole lumbar sagittal alignment was influenced by single SA. Therefore, obtaining adequate segmental lordosis is desirable considering the effect on the whole spine for a long time.
The authors found that the laminoplasty and translaminar screw technique is feasible in the thoracic and lumbar regions, but further studies are needed to analyze the biomechanical effects and long-term outcomes in a large number of patients.
The design of the PEEK cage used may influence the SA, and this association needs to be considered when using stand-alone PEEK cages.
