About the Lab

Professor Sung Bae Park's research lab focuses on spinal surgery and orthopedic regenerative medicine, with a particular emphasis on osteoporosis-related spinal disorders and surgical outcomes in elderly patients. The lab investigates bone metabolism, including the role of osteoclasts and osteoblasts in spinal fusion, and explores anabolic versus anti-resorptive therapies to improve surgical success in osteoporotic patients. It also conducts preclinical studies using animal models, such as bilateral ovariectomy-induced osteopenic rats, to evaluate bone health and surgical interventions. Additionally, the lab contributes to clinical research on degenerative spinal conditions, examining surgical trends, reoperation rates, and the efficacy of minimally invasive techniques.

Strategies of Spinal Fusion on Osteoporotic Spine
Sung Bae Park, Chun Kee Chung
SJR Q2FWCI 1.7Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

The prevalence of osteoporosis has been increasing globally. Recently surgical indications for elderly patients with osteoporosis have been increasing. However, only few strategies are available for osteoporotic patients who need spinal fusion. Osteoporosis is a result of negative bone remodeling from enhanced function of the osteoclasts. Because bone formation is the result of coupling between osteoblasts and osteoclasts, anti-resorptive agents that induce osteoclast apoptosis may not be effect

Primary carcinosarcoma of the gallbladder

FWCI 8.2Journal of the Korean Surgical SocietyOA

Carcinosarcoma of gallbladder (CSGB) is a rare malignancy characterized by malignant epithelial and mesenchymal components. Its pathogenesis is unknown and most CSGBs are associated with poor survival because the disease normally presents at an advanced stage, and as a result, curative resection is uncommon. This report describes a case that underwent curative resection. A 77-year-old woman presented with right upper quadrant pain. The preoperative diagnosis was gallbladder (GB) cancer, and thus

Study Design. A retrospective cohort study. Objective. The objectives of the present study were to examine the changes in the number of surgeries, surgical methods selected, and reoperation rates between the years 2003 and 2008. Summary of Background Data. The selection of the appropriate surgical method between decompression-only (D) and decompression plus fusion (DF) represents a challenging clinical dilemma in patients with degenerative lumbar spinal spondylolisthesis. DF is selected in great

SJR Q2FWCI 1.6Journal of Korean Neurosurgical SocietyOA

Endovascular therapy can be successfully used as a primary treatment for the majority of patients with spinal DAVFs. Although it is difficult to perform in some patients, endovascular embolization should be the primary treatment of choice for spinal DAVF.
