Systematic variation in the electrical conductivity of poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) was achieved by oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD). For oCVD, both the oxidant, Fe(III)Cl3, and 3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene (EDOT) monomer are introduced in the vapor phase. A heated crucible allows for sublimation of the oxidant directly into the reactor chamber operating at 150 mTorr. Spontaneous reaction of the oxidant with the monomer introduced though a feedback-controlled mass flow system
A robust superhydrophobic fabric was achieved by depositing a stacked polymer film composed of a poly(1,3,5,7-tetravinyl-1,3,5,7-tetramethylcyclotetrasiloxane) (p(V4D4)) layer and a poly(1H,1H,2H,2H-perfluorodecylacrylate) (p(PFDA)) layer. The polymer film was deposited by initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD), a solventless process that allows conformal coating of the stacked polymer film on various micro-structured substrates. The two polymeric layers most likely formed a covalent bonding
Novel nanoporous poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films with basalt-like surface morphology are successfully obtained via a one-step, vapor phase process of oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD) by introducing a new oxidant, CuCl(2). The substrate temperature of the oCVD process is a crucial process parameter for controlling electrical conductivity and conjugation length. Moreover, the surface morphology is also systemically tunable through variations in substrate temperature, a uni
Conductive polymer chains were directly grafted on a variety of organic substrates containing aromatic functionalities. In this one-step mechanism, the covalent linkages between the substrates and the conducting polymers are created. The enhanced adhesion by grafting enables high-resolution patterning (down to 60 nm) of grafted PEDOT films using standard lithographic techniques without any modification of the patterning processes.
A novel high-strength nano-adhesive is demonstrated for fabricating nano- and microfluidic devices. While the traditional plasma sealing methods are specific for sealing glass to poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS), the new method is compatible with a wide variety of polymeric and inorganic materials, including flexible substrates. Additionally, the traditional method requires that sealing occur within minutes after the plasma treatment. In contrast, the individual parts treated with the nano-adhesive
simple method to fabricate a multifunctional patterned platform on the nanometer scale is demonstrated. The platform contains two reactive functional groups on the surface: one is an acetylene group which can be functionalized via click chemistry, and the other is an amine group which can also be functionalized by classic carbodiimide chemistry with N-hydroxysuccinimide (NHS). The click-active and amine surface could be obtained from polymer coating of poly(propargyl methacrylate) (PPMA) via ini
Electrically conductive materials provide a suitable platform for the in vitro study of excitable cells, such as skeletal muscle cells, due to their inherent conductivity and electroactivity. Here it is demonstrated that bioinspired electroconductive nanopatterned substrates enhance myogenic differentiation and maturation. The topographical cues from the highly aligned collagen bundles that form the extracellular matrix of skeletal muscle tissue are mimicked using nanopatterns created with capil
Abstract Wearable electronic devices are being developed because of their wide potential applications and user convenience. Among them, wearable organic light emitting diodes (OLEDs) play an important role in visualizing the data signal processed in wearable electronics to humans. In this study, textile-based OLEDs were fabricated and their practical utility was demonstrated. The textile-based OLEDs exhibited a stable operating lifetime under ambient conditions, enough mechanical durability to e
Control over doping level and work function is achieved for poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) films deposited by oxidative chemical vapor deposition (oCVD). Surface analysis reveals the equivalence of the surface and bulk compositions for the oCVD films. The oCVD PEDOT polymer chains doped solely with Cl− ions. By increasing the substrate temperature used for deposition, the doping level was monotonically increased from 17to33at.%, resulting in a corresponding ability to tune the work fun
Multi-valued logic (MVL) circuits based on heterojunction transistor (HTR) have emerged as an effective strategy for high-density information processing without increasing the circuit complexity. Herein, an organic ternary logic inverter (T-inverter) is demonstrated, where a nonvolatile floating-gate flash memory is employed to control the channel conductance systematically, thus realizing the stabilized T-inverter operation. The 3-dimensional (3D) T-inverter is fabricated in a vertically stacke
Over the past decade, homogeneous mixing in microfluidic devices has been a critical challenge, because of the inherently low flow rates in microfluidic channels. Although several mixer designs have been suggested to achieve efficient mixing, most of them involve intricate structures requiring a series of laborious fabrication processes. Operation at high flow rates can greatly enhance mixing by induction of turbulence, but devices that can resist such a high pressure drop to induce turbulence i
Tailoring the surface of the dielectric layer is of critical importance to form a good interface with the following channel layer for organic thin film transistors (OTFTs). Here, a simple surface treatment method is applied onto an ultrathin (<15 nm) organosilicon‐based dielectric layer via the initiated chemical vapor deposition (iCVD) to make it compatible with organic semiconductors without degrading its insulating property. A molecular‐thin oxide capping layer is formed on a 15 nm thick p
For energy-efficient extraction of biomass from microalgae, it is essential to extract the intracellular lipid directly from wet microalgae without drying the microalgal biomass. In this work, a novel, highly efficient cell disruption process was devised using a functional membrane coated with a cationic polymer. The proposed mechanism of cell disruption involves the perturbation of the local electrostatic equilibrium of the amphiphilic microalgal cell membrane caused by the direct contact with
