Successful integration of advanced semiconductor devices with biological systems will accelerate basic scientific discoveries and their translation into clinical technologies. In neuroscience generally, and in optogenetics in particular, the ability to insert light sources, detectors, sensors, and other components into precise locations of the deep brain yields versatile and important capabilities. Here, we introduce an injectable class of cellular-scale optoelectronics that offers such features
The sensitivity of a nanoscale crack-based sensor is enhanced markedly by modulating the crack depth. The crack-depth-propagated sensor exhibits ≈16 000 gauge factor at 2% strain and a superior signal-to-noise ratio of ≈35, which facilitates detection of target signals for voice-pattern recognition.
A method for forming efficient, ultrathin GaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and for their assembly onto foreign substances is reported. The LEDs have lateral dimensions ranging from ~1 mm × 1 mm to ~25 μm × 25 μm. Quantitative experimental and theoretical studies show the benefits of small device geometry on thermal management, for both continuous and pulsed-mode operation, the latter of which suggests the potential use of these technologies in bio-integrated contexts.
Abstract Owing to the growing demand for highly integrated electronics, anisotropic heat dissipation of thermal management material is a challenging and promising technique. Moreover, to satisfy the needs for advancing flexible and stretchable electronic devices, maintaining high thermal conductivity during the deformation of electronic materials is at issue. Presented here is an effective assembly technique to realize a continuous array of boron nitride (BN) nanosheets on tetrahedral structures
Bioelectronics needs to continuously monitor mechanical and electrophysiological signals for patients. However, the signals always include artifacts by patients' unexpected movement (such as walking and respiration under approximately 30 hertz). The current method to remove them is a signal process that uses a bandpass filter, which may cause signal loss. We present an unconventional bandpass filter material-viscoelastic gelatin-chitosan hydrogel damper, inspired by the viscoelastic cuticular pa
A simple yet robust method to fabricate an array of stooped nanohairs is presented, with a proper choice of material and post e-beam exposure even for an aspect ratio of 10. The stooped nanohairs have the unidirectional feature of frictional adhesion with a remarkably high adhesion force (∼11 N cm−2). Detailed facts of importance to specialist readers are published as ”Supporting Information”. Such documents are peer-reviewed, but not copy-edited or typeset. They are made available as submitted
Fabrics are widely used in hospitals and many other settings for bedding, clothing, and face masks; however, microbial pathogens can survive on surfaces for a long time, leading to microbial transmission. Coatings of metallic particles on fabrics have been widely used to eradicate pathogens. However, current metal particle coating technologies encounter numerous issues such as nonuniformity, processing complexity, and poor adhesion. To overcome these issues, an easy-to-control and straightforwar
Light-to-heat conversion systems have been attracting growing research interest in the last few decades, due to their highly intriguing photothermal properties and their wide applications ranging from biomedical applications to solar energy harvesting to mechanical actuators. In general, because the light-to-heat conversion efficiency depends strongly on the absorbing material, significant efforts have been focused on fabricating broadband light absorbers. However, there are several challenges a
Abstract Squaraine dyes (SQs) are an important class of polymethine dyes with a unique reasonable‐stabilized zwitterionic structure, in which electrons are highly delocalized over the conjugated bridge. These dyes can not only be easily synthesized via a condensation, but also exhibit intense absorption and emission in the visible and near‐infrared region with excellent photochemical stability, making them attractive material candidates for many photoelectric and biomedical applications. Thus, i
Transition metal disulfides have been attracting significant attentions in recent years. There are extensive applications of transition metal disulfides, especially on gas sensing applications, due to their large specific surface-to-volume ratios, high sensitivity to adsorption of gas molecules and tunable surface functionality depending on the decoration species or functional groups. However, there are several drawbacks such as poor gas selectivity, sluggish recovery characteristics and difficu
We suggest gelatin hydrogel as an electrolyte and demonstrate organic electrochemical transistors (OECTs) based on a sheet of gelatin. We also modulate electrical characteristics of the OECT with respect to pH condition of the gelatin hydrogel from acid to base and analyze its characteristics based on the electrochemical theory. Moreover, we extend the gelatin-based OECT to electrochemical logic circuits, for example, NOT, NOR, and NAND gates.
Recently, anisotropic heat dissipation and its management have drawn attention as a promising technique for highly integrated electrical devices. Among many potentially challenging materials such as carbon nanotube, graphene, metal particles, and inorganic ceramics commonly used for high thermally conductive fillers in a composite form, nanoscale ceramic fillers are considered ideal candidates due to their thermal conductivity, electrical insulation, and low thermal expansion coefficient. Howeve
We report on unidirectional wetting and spreading of a water droplet on stooped polymer nanohairs fabricated by replica molding and oblique electron beam irradiation. When a droplet is placed on the surface with high aspect-ratio (AR ∼ 10) directionally bent nanohairs, it wets and spontaneously spreads over the surface in a unidirectional manner along the stooped direction with one edge being pinned to the substrate. To evaluate such anisotropic wetting property, the liquid velocity is measured
Abstract Human nonverbal communication tools are very ambiguous and difficult to transfer to machines or artificial intelligence (AI). If the AI understands the mental state behind a user’s decision, it can learn more appropriate decisions even in unclear situations. We introduce the Brain–AI Closed-Loop System (BACLoS), a wireless interaction platform that enables human brain wave analysis and transfers results to AI to verify and enhance AI decision-making. We developed a wireless earbud-like
