Herein, we demonstrate that the strategic implementation of electron-accepting tricoordinate boron and electron-donating carbazole subunits into polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) produces a family of attractive full-color luminophores that can emit narrowband and efficient thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF). A versatile modular design for these boron- and carbazole-embedded PAHs can facilitate the systematic modulation of their photophysical and optoelectronic properties. Orga
Butterfly-shaped luminescent benzophenone derivatives with small energy gaps between their singlet and triplet excited states are used to achieve efficient full-color delayed fluorescence. Organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) with these benzophenone derivatives doped in the emissive layer can generate electroluminescence ranging from blue to orange-red and white, with maximum external quantum efficiencies of up to 14.3%. Triplet excitons are efficiently harvested through delayed fluorescence ch
Abstract Organic thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) materials have attracted significant research interest in the field of organic electronics because of their inherent advantage of 100% exciton utilization capability in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs) without the use of noble metals. However, despite their high internal electroluminescence quantum efficiencies approaching unity, broad emission spectra with sizable full width at half maxima (FWHM; 60–100 nm) present a critical
Luminescent materials consisting of boron clusters, such as carboranes, have attracted immense interest in recent years. In this study, luminescent organic-inorganic conjugated systems based on o-carboranes directly bonded to electron-donating and electron-accepting π-conjugated units were elaborated as novel optoelectronic materials. These o-carborane derivatives simultaneously possessed aggregation-induced emission (AIE) and thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) capabilities, and sho
Concentration quenching of thermally activated delayed fluorescence is found to be dominated by electron-exchange interactions, as described by the Dexter energy-transfer model. Owing to the short-range nature of the electron-exchange interactions, even a small modulation in the molecular geometric structure drastically affects the concentration-quenching, leading to enhanced solid-state photoluminescence and electroluminescence quantum efficiencies.
Thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) π-conjugated polymers are developed for solution-processed TADF-OLEDs. Benzophenone-based alternating donor-acceptor structures contribute to the small ∆EST , enabling efficient exciton-harvesting through TADF. Solution-processed OLEDs using the TADF polymers as emitters can achieve high maximum external electroluminescence efficiencies of up to 9.3%.
Establishing a simple and versatile design strategy to finely modulate emission colors while retaining high luminescence efficiency and color purity remains an appealing yet challenging task for the development of multi-resonance-induced thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) materials. Herein, we demonstrate that the strategic introduction of electron-withdrawing imine and electron-donating amine moieties into a versatile boron-embedded 1,3-bis(carbazol-9-yl)benzene skeleton enables
Abstract A series of liquid‐crystalline (LC) π‐ ‐conjugated oligothiophenes bearing three or two alkoxy chains at their extremities has been designed and synthesized. These polycatenar oligothiophenes form various LC nanostructures including smectic, columnar, and micellar cubic phases. These properties depend on the number and length of the terminal alkoxy chains. The hole mobilities for the oligothiophenes have been measured. The layered smectic and columnar structures are capable of transport
Developing organic luminophores with unique capability of strong narrowband emission is both crucial and challenging for the further advancement of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). Herein, a nanographitic fused-nonacyclic π-system (BSBS-N1), which was strategically embedded with multiple boron, nitrogen, and sulfur atoms, was developed as a new multi-resonance thermally activated delayed fluorescence (MR-TADF) emitter. Narrowband sky-blue emission with a peak at 478 nm, full width at half
A series of propeller-shaped π-conjugated molecules based on 2,4,6-tris(thiophene-2-yl)-1,3,5-triazines has been designed and synthesized to obtain ambipolar charge-transporting liquid-crystalline materials. The 3-fold electron-donating aromatic units are attached to the electron-accepting triazine core, which forms electro-functional octupolar π-conjugated structures. These octupolar molecules self-organize into one-dimensional columnar nanostructures and exhibit ambipolar carrier transport beh
High-efficiency blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules, consisting of phenoxaphosphine oxide and phenoxathiin dioxide as acceptor units and 9,9-dimethylacridan as a donor unit, are reported. Maximum external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies of up to 20.5% are achieved in blue organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs) by employing these materials as TADF emitters.
Abstract Organic luminescent materials that exhibit thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) can harvest both singlet and triplet excitons for light emission, leading to high electroluminescence (EL) quantum efficiencies in organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, efficient red TADF materials are still very rare because of their restricted molecular design based on the energy gap law. To address this issue, elaborate π‐conjugated donor–acceptor (D–A) systems that can simultaneously

A high triplet energy (ET) host material, hexakis(9H-carbazol-9-yl)cyclotriphosphazene (PzCz), is used in high-efficiency organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). PzCz (ET = 3.00 eV) functions as an effective host for thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) molecules. Highest external electroluminescence quantum efficiencies over 15% and 18% are achieved for blue-green and green TADF-OLEDs, respectively.
Deep-blue thermally activated delayed fluorescence (TADF) emitters are promising alternatives for conventional fluorescence and phosphorescence materials for practical application in organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs). However, as appropriate bipolar hosts for deep-blue TADF-OLEDs are scarce, the development of efficient deep-blue TADF emitters that are applicable to both doped and non-doped systems is an urgent task. In this study, we developed a new family of blue TADF emitters that demonst
