Professor Wan Beom Park's research lab specializes in infectious diseases, with a strong focus on viral pathogenesis, antimicrobial resistance, and host immune responses in HIV, SARS-CoV-2, and other emerging pathogens. The lab investigates clinical outcomes, treatment efficacy, and long-term sequelae of severe respiratory and systemic infections, including MERS and HIV. Key research directions include antimicrobial stewardship, particularly in comparing antibiotic regimens for serious staphylococcal infections, and pharmacogenomics, such as HLA-B*5701 screening in Asian populations to prevent drug hypersensitivity reactions.

Novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) is found to cause a large outbreak started from Wuhan since December 2019 in China and SARS-CoV-2 infections have been reported with epidemiological linkage to China in 25 countries until now. We isolated SARS-CoV-2 from the oropharyngeal sample obtained from the patient with the first laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection in Korea. Cytopathic effects of SARS-CoV-2 in the Vero cell cultures were confluent 3 days after the first blind passage of the sample. Coro
Adherence to clinic visits early after initiation of HAART is an independent predictor for long-term clinical progression in HIV patients.
About 20% of methicillin-susceptible Staphylococcus aureus (MSSA) isolates have a substantial inoculum effect with cefazolin, suggesting that cefazolin treatment may be associated with clinical failure for serious MSSA infections. There are no well-matched controlled studies comparing cefazolin with nafcillin for the treatment of MSSA bacteremia. A retrospective propensity-score-matched case-control study was performed from 2004 to 2009 in a tertiary care hospital where nafcillin was unavailable
This nationwide, prospective cohort study evaluated pulmonary function and radiological sequelae according to infection severity in 73 survivors from the 2015 Middle East respiratory syndrome (MERS) outbreak in Korea. Patients with severe pneumonia in MERS-coronavirus infection had more impaired pulmonary function than those with no or mild pneumonia at the 1-year follow-up, which was compatible with the radiological sequelae. Severe pneumonia significantly impairs pulmonary function and makes l
Human leukocyte antigen allele (HLA)-B*5701 is associated with abacavir hypersensitivity. However, the carriage rate of HLA-B*5701 has rarely been studied in Asians. In 534 Korean patients with human immunodeficiency virus infection, HLA-B*5701 status was determined by polymerase chain reaction with HLA-B*5701-specific primers. No patients had the HLA-B*5701 allele (95% confidence interval, 0%-0.7%). This explains the paucity of immunologically confirmed cases of abacavir hypersensitivity in Kor
infections (8,9). This rate was even in the lower range of values found among HIV-infected heterosexual persons in industrialized countries (9%-27%) (2). Our results therefore suggest that the high seroprevalence rates of HIV and HCV in Africa will not necessarily result in a high prevalence of HIV/HCV coinfection.
Among prospectively enrolled adult patients with cancer receiving immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs; n = 46) or cytotoxic agents (n = 90), seroprotection and seroconversion rates after seasonal quadrivalent influenza vaccinations were higher with ICI than with cytotoxic chemotherapy. These results support annual influenza vaccinations for cancer patients receiving ICIs. Clinical Trials Registration clinicaltrials.gov (NCT03590808).
The MDR1 G2677T/A variation and UGT1A1*28 are independent risk factors for severe atazanavir-associated hyperbilirubinemia in Korean human immunodeficiency virus-infected patients.
OSCE score from patient encounters did not reflect the clinical reasoning abilities of the medical students in this study. The evaluation of medical students' clinical reasoning abilities through OSCE should be strengthened.
The proportion of tuberculosis manifested by immune reconstitution inflammatory syndrome (IRIS) after HAART has not been established. We describe the incidence and clinical features of tuberculosis manifested by IRIS after HAART in an intermediate tuberculosis burden area. The findings suggest that a significant proportion of the tuberculosis occurring early after starting HAART is manifested by IRIS.
MALDI-TOF MS has a high chance of failure in guiding ID physicians to optimal antibiotics, especially against resistant organisms. With increasingly common resistant organisms, rapid AST is needed to identify optimal targeted antibiotics early in bacteraemia.
