Professor Yikweon Jang's research lab specializes in evolutionary ecology and behavioral ecology, focusing on species coexistence, reproductive isolation, and host-parasite interactions in terrestrial vertebrates and insects. The lab investigates how ecological differentiation, particularly through acoustic signaling and microhabitat use, enables coexistence of closely related species such as treefrogs and crickets. Research also explores the role of invasive species—like bullfrogs—in amplifying disease transmission (e.g., chytrid fungus) and altering community dynamics. The lab integrates field observations, acoustic monitoring, and statistical modeling to understand evolutionary and ecological processes across temporal and spatial scales.

Most generic divergences in Aphidini occurred in the Middle Tertiary when primary hosts, mainly in the Rosaceae, were diverging, whereas species-level divergences were contemporaneous with diversification of the secondary hosts such as Poaceae in the Middle to Late Tertiary. Our results suggest that evolution of host alternation within Aphidini may have occurred during the Middle Tertiary (Oligocene) when the secondary hosts emerged.
