About the Lab
Professor Yon Su Kim's research lab focuses on immunology and nephrology, with a strong emphasis on the pathogenesis and treatment of kidney diseases. The lab investigates immune-mediated mechanisms in glomerular diseases such as membranous nephropathy and ischemia-reperfusion injury, particularly the roles of autoantibodies and natural killer T (NKT) cells. It also explores the clinical impact of metabolic acidosis in kidney transplant recipients and the immunological aspects of viral hemorrhagic fevers like HFRS. The lab integrates translational research with clinical studies to identify novel therapeutic targets and biomarkers in chronic kidney disease and renal transplantation.

15American Society of Nephrology, October 30-November 04 2012, San Diego, CA, USA. Circulating autoantibodies against M-type phospholipase A 2 receptor (PLA 2 R) are important pathogenic antibodies of idiopathic membranous nephropathy (MN) in adults. However, previous studies on the clinical impact of anti-PLA 2 R antibodies demonstrated several limitations, including insufficient numbers of study subjects and different time points and methods for anti-PLA 2 R antibody measurement. To verify the c
Owing to shared receptor components, the biologic activities of IL-15 are similar to those of IL-2. However, the patterns of tissue expression of IL-2/IL-2R alpha and IL-15/IL-15R alpha differ. The development of agents targeting the receptor and signaling elements of IL-15 may provide a new perspective for treatment of diseases associated with expression of IL-15/IL-15R. We designed, genetically constructed, and expressed a receptor site-specific IL-15 antagonist by mutating glutamine residues
Long-term use of AST-120 added to standard treatment did not change renal disease progression, proteinuria, mortality, and health-related quality of life in patients with advanced renal dysfunction.
There is a significant immune response to ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI), but the role of immunomodulatory natural killer T (NKT) cell subtypes is not well understood. Here, we compared the severity of IRI in mice deficient in type I/II NKT cells (CD1d(-/-)) or type I NKT cells (Jα18(-/-)). The absence of NKT cells, especially type II NKT cells, accentuated the severity of renal injury, whereas repletion of NKT cells attenuated injury. Adoptively transferred NKT cells trafficked into the tubu
Metabolic acidosis (MA), indicated by low serum total CO2 (TCO2) concentration, is a risk factor for mortality and progressive renal dysfunction in CKD. However, the long-term effects of MA on kidney transplant recipients (KTRs) are unclear. We conducted a multicenter retrospective cohort study of 2318 adult KTRs, from January 1, 1997 to March 31, 2015, to evaluate the prevalence of MA and the relationships between TCO2 concentration and clinical outcomes. The pr
We identified a unique U-shaped relationship between midterm eGFR and adverse pregnancy outcomes, and the optimal range of midterm eGFR levels was 120-150 ml/min per 1.73 m2. In those without evident functional renal impairment, the absence of prominent MRH might be a significant risk factor for poor pregnancy outcomes.
TNF superfamily member 13 (TNFSF13) has been identified as a susceptibility gene for IgA nephropathy in recent genetic studies. However, the role of TNFSF13 in the progression of IgA nephropathy remains unresolved. We evaluated two genetic polymorphisms (rs11552708 and rs3803800) and plasma levels of TNFSF13 in 637 patients with IgA nephropathy, and determined the risk of ESRD according to theses variable. Neither of the examined genetic polymorphisms associated with a clinical outcome of IgA ne
PD exhibits superior survival to HD in the early period of dialysis, even after adjusting for differences in the patients' characteristics between the two modalities. Notably, the most common cause of death was infection in this Korean cohort.
Although monitoring the intracellular concentration of immunosuppressive agents may be a promising approach to individualizing the therapy after organ transplantation, additional studies on this issue are needed prior to its clinical approval. We investigated the relationship between intracellular and whole blood concentrations of tacrolimus (IC-TAC and WB-TAC, respectively), the factors affecting this relationship, and the risk of rejection based upon IC-TAC in stable kidney recipients. Both IC
Uteroglobin (UG) is an anti-inflammatory/immunomodulatory protein. Targeted disruption of UG rendered mouse glomerulonephritis resembling immunoglobulin (Ig)A nephropathy (IgAN). Sequence analysis on exon 1 of UG showed several putative binding sites for transcription factors, and polymorphisms in this site might influence the expression level of UG as a competitive protein. We speculated that the single nucleotide polymorphism at the 38th nucleotide (A to G) from the transcription initiation si
Soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH) in endothelial cells determines the plasma concentrations of epoxyeicosatrienoic acids (EETs), which may act as vasoactive agents to control vascular tone. We hypothesized that the regulation of sEH activity may have a therapeutic value in preventing acute kidney injury by controlling the concentration of EETs. In this study, we therefore induced ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) in C57BL/6 mice and controlled sEH activity by intraperitoneal administration of the
Taken together, these data suggest that tacrolimus dose monitoring based on body composition may provide adequate dosage leading to favorable long-term outcomes.
Liver transplantation (LT) is the treatment of choice for hepatorenal syndrome (HRS). However, the clinical benefits of living donor liver transplantation (LDLT) are not yet well established. We, therefore, investigated the outcomes of patients with HRS who underwent LDLT and patients with HRS who received transplants from deceased donors. This study focused on 71 patients with HRS out of a total of 726 consecutive adult Korean patients who underwent LT at a single Asian center. We compared 48 p
