Professor Yoon-Ho Hong's research lab specializes in clinical and translational neuroscience, with a focus on neuromuscular disorders, inherited and metabolic neuropathies, and autoimmune disorders of the neuromuscular junction. The lab investigates electrophysiological biomarkers such as the motor unit number index (MUNIX) for neurodegenerative diseases like amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), explores the pathophysiology of mitochondrial and enzymatic deficiencies (e.g., dihydrolipoamide dehydrogenase deficiency), and examines neurological complications of viral infections and vaccines, including post-infectious and post-vaccinal Guillain-Barré syndrome. The lab also contributes to understanding cerebrovascular disorders, such as moyamoya disease, and autoimmune conditions like myasthenia gravis, particularly in Asian populations.

Our observations suggest that COVID-19 vaccines may be associated with GBS of distinctive clinical features characterized by severe quadriplegia, disproportionately frequent bilateral facial palsy or atypical incomplete variants. Continuous surveillance and further studies using robust study designs are warranted to fully assess the significance of the association.

We describe a case with unilateral moyamoya disease that showed progressive hemichorea as an initial manifestation. Single photon emission computed tomography showed perfusion defect in the contralateral basal ganglia although magnetic resonance imaging was unremarkable. Hemichorea improved along with normalization of perfusion after bypass surgery, suggestive of striatal hypoperfusion as the cause of hemichorea.
