Professor Young Chul Sung's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and gene therapy, with a focus on developing innovative cell- and gene-based therapeutic strategies for cancer and infectious diseases. The lab pioneers the use of mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) as targeted delivery vehicles for anti-tumor agents, particularly in gliomas and renal cell carcinoma, while also exploring synthetic hydrogels for long-term stem cell therapy. Additionally, the lab investigates host immune responses to viral vaccines, especially against hepatitis C virus, to identify correlates of protection. Their work integrates molecular biology, synthetic biology, and biomaterials to design smart, spatio-temporally controlled therapeutic systems.

Sequential combination gene therapy using MSC/dTRAIL-TK achieved long-term remission of metastatic RCC without noticeable toxicity. Our findings provide an innovative therapeutic approach to completely eradicate metastatic tumors by simple, repeated administrations of MSC/dTRAIL-TK.
