Professor Young Keun On's research lab specializes in cardiovascular medicine, with a focus on autonomic regulation, endothelial dysfunction, and structural heart disease. The lab investigates mechanisms underlying syncope, particularly neurally mediated syncope, and explores biomarkers such as resistin for coronary artery disease and restenosis in diabetic patients. It also examines the role of oxidative stress in hypertension and the impact of volume overload on left ventricular and atrial remodeling in mitral regurgitation. Vitamin C (acutely) and amlodipine (chronically) improved endothelial function in hypertensive patients. These results suggest that increased oxidative stress, at least in part, may be involved in the decreased endothelial function in hypertension.
Volume overload in chronic severe mitral regurgitation may influence left ventricular remodeling and reverse remodeling, as well as left atrial remodeling and reverse remodeling. Preoperative lower LAVI, younger age, absence of hypertension, and absence of atrial fibrillation may predict LAVIR, and preoperative lower LVMI, lower NT-proBNP levels, and absence of hypertension may predict LVMIR after surgery for chronic severe mitral regurgitation.
In patients with CIED, prior history of heart failure, sinus node dysfunction, and LA volume index ≥38.5 mL/m were independent predictors of new AF cases. Newly developed AF was significantly associated with increased risk of HF and stroke readmission, according to long-term follow up.
