Professor Young-Mock Lee's research lab specializes in mitochondrial diseases, with a focus on understanding the pathophysiology of mitochondrial cytopathies such as MELAS and Leigh syndrome. The lab investigates novel therapeutic strategies, including NAD+ modulators and gene therapy using AAV vectors, to correct metabolic and genetic defects in mitochondrial disorders. Additionally, the lab explores regenerative approaches in animal models, including germline chimera systems in poultry, to advance translational research in metabolic and neurological diseases. Their work bridges molecular genetics, metabolic medicine, and regenerative biology to develop targeted treatments for intractable pediatric and inherited conditions.

MRC defects are one of the important causes of probably symptomatic childhood epilepsy. A ketogenic diet should be carefully considered for treatment of intractable epilepsy related to MRC defects.
