Professor Young Ae Kang's research lab focuses on infectious diseases, particularly tuberculosis and non-tuberculous mycobacteria (NTM), with an emphasis on improving diagnostic methods, understanding disease epidemiology, and exploring host-pathogen interactions. The lab investigates host immune responses using advanced in vitro models, such as the liver-sinusoid-on-a-chip system, to study viral infections like Hepatitis B. Their work spans clinical epidemiology, biomarker discovery, and translational research in respiratory and liver diseases.

This large population-based study showed that the incidence and prevalence of NTM infection in Korea increased rapidly from 2003 to 2016. They were higher in women and the elderly. The mortality rate in the population with NTM infection was higher than that in the general population.
The concentrations of CRP and PCT differed significantly in patients with pulmonary TB and bacterial CAP. The high sensitivity and negative predictive value for differentiating pulmonary TB from bacterial CAP suggest a supplementary role of CRP and PCT in the diagnostic exclusion of pulmonary TB from bacterial CAP in areas with an intermediate prevalence of pulmonary TB.
