About the Lab
Professor An Sung-ho's research lab specializes in applied linguistics and English language education, with a strong focus on curriculum development, teacher professional development, and the integration of interdisciplinary approaches in English teaching. The lab investigates the challenges and potentials of integrative and interdisciplinary English education, particularly in Korean educational contexts, while also exploring second language acquisition phenomena such as the overuse of the verb 'be' in Korean EFL learners' interlanguage. Additionally, the lab contributes to disaster risk reduction through research on tsunami hazard mapping and early warning systems, reflecting a unique interdisciplinary engagement with educational policy and public safety.

This paper explores the grammatical properties of verb be in early Korean EFL inter-languages. Unlike in the L1 acquisition of English, it has been observed (Hahn 2000), excessive forms of verb be are attested frequently in early stages of the syntactic acquisition of English as a foreign language in Korea. The excessive presence of the copular or auxiliary verb has triggered interesting debates on its nature: the topic-subject marker hypothesis (Hahn 2000a,b, 2001; Shin 2000, 2001; Ahn 2003a) v

The Linguistic Association of Korea Journal, 24(2), 149-182. This paper reports an analysis of the results from two consecutive focused group interviews of four primary and secondary teachers, and an individual interview of a secondary teacher. All the five participants had experienced teaching “integrative” English classes, whether content-b
This article critically examines the 2009 Amendment of the School Curriculum of the Republic of Korea for English education. More specifically, it focuses on whether the general goals for primary and secondary school education stated in its general guidelines are faithfully reflected on the specific statements of the goals, achievement standards, and methods of instruction and evaluation for English education at the same levels. The degree of faithful linkage is evaluated particularly with regar
The English Syntax course is widely offered by English-related departments in Korea. As with other college courses, a fundamental issue regarding this course will be how to teach it. This issue should be considered against Korea's current need for talented people with creativity. Its education sector is to explore how to produce such creative workforce. The revised 7th national curriculum aims at helping develop creativity in the secondary education. This paper assumes that the most efficient wa
The purpose of this paper is to investigate what linguistic features Korean learners' English manifests. For this purpose, we have collected Korean learners' e-mail data and constructed two corpora: NNS1 (a collection of emails by Korean elementary school learners of English) and NNS2 (a collection of emails by Korean adult learners of English). We have then analyzed them in comparison with NS (a collection of emails by teenage speakers of English). In line with Ringbom (1998), we have found out
How should English syntax be taught in college so that it can help students build up creativity? This paper suggests one way on the basis of an action research into the English Syntax course that the author taught in 2009 utilizing (i) challenging lectures, (ii) student reflective essay writing and (iii) classroom discussions of the data, hypotheses, and questions that students presented in their reflective essays. Analyzing the lecture notes, 74 student essays, and instructor response texts, am
The purpose of this paper is to find out some major characteristics of intermediate-advanced Korean learners' English by corpus- linguistically analyzing their essays in comparison with native speakers'. We construct a corpus of CBT TOEFL essays by Korean learners, NNS1 (94076 words in 402 texts), and its sub-corpus, NNS2 (14291 words in 45 texts), and then a corpus of model essays written or meticulously edited by native speakers, NS (14833 words in 35 texts). We compare NNS1 and NNS2 with NS,
This study delves into English language “divestment” in Korean classrooms by focusing on why some students sleep in their English classes. Data were collected using interviews with 26 first and second year high school students who often fell asleep in English classes. The data were subjected to the conventional content analysis and interpreted using Darvin and Norton’s (2015) investment framework. The findings showed that the students divested from English classes for four reasons. First, they d

Ahn, Sung-Ho G.․Lee, Mun Woo. 2015. How to Teach Linguistics Courses in College: A Yungbokhap Educational Approach. The Journal of Studies in Language 31.2, 337-355. The primary aim of this paper is to explore several ways to teach linguistics courses in college so that they can help students prepare for living in the 21st century of globalization. Showing why students will need the so-called “21st century competencies” including critical literacy, it presents yungbokhap education as a viable op
This action research explores ways of improving college freshmen’s critical English literacy through an English-mediated introductory English linguistics course at a college of education. The researcher/instructor has designed the course under a flipped learning approach in that he provided two video clips and two accompanying PPT files for each of the twelve topics and asked the 35 student participants to critically preview them along with relevant chapters from the textbook, and to prepare mat
