About the Lab
Professor Beom Gi Hong's research lab focuses on cardiovascular pathophysiology, particularly the role of metabolic and oxidative stress in diabetic vascular complications and atherosclerotic disease. Key research directions include the impact of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), small dense LDL (sd-LDL), and metabolic syndrome on coronary artery disease (CAD) progression and restenosis. The lab investigates the protective mechanisms of statins and other pharmacological agents in vascular smooth muscle cells and evaluates clinical biomarkers for predicting cardiovascular outcomes. Their work bridges molecular mechanisms with clinical cardiology, emphasizing translational research in diabetes and hypertension-related vascular disease.

15Advanced glycation endproducts (AGEs)-induced vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs) proliferation and formation of reactive oxygen species (ROS) are emerging as one of the important mechanisms of diabetic vasculopathy but little is known about the antioxidative action of HMG CoA reductase inhibitor (statin) on AGEs. We hypothesized that statin might reduce AGEs-induced intracellular ROS of VSMCs and analyzed the possible mechanism of action of statin in AGEs-induced cellular signaling. Aortic smoo
Small dense LDL (sd-LDL) has recently emerged as an important coronary artery disease (CAD) risk factor. This study was performed to investigate how LDL particle size is related to CAD and acute coronary syndrome (ACS). Blood samples were collected from 504 patients that underwent coronary angiography to evaluate chest pain. The LDL particle size of these samples was measured. The mean LDL particle size was smaller in patients with angiographically proven CAD than in the controls (26.41±0.95 vs
Purpose: Metabolic syndrome (MS) has been reported as a potential risk factor of coronary artery disease (CAD). The aims of this study were to assess whether there was a relationship between MS score and CAD angiographic severity, and to assess the predictive value of individual components of MS for CAD. Materials and Methods: We retrospectively enrolled 632 patients who underwent coronary angiography for suspected CAD (394 men, 61.0 ± 10.6 years of age). MS was defined by the National Cholester
The formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs), in various tissues has been known to enhance immunoinflammatory reactions and local oxidant stresses in long standing diabetes. Recently, AGEs have been reported to play a role in neointimal formation in animal models of arterial injury. We attempted to determine whether the serum levels of AGEs are associated with coronary restenosis in diabetic patients. Blood samples were collected from diabetic patients with coronary artery disease und
Background and Objectives: We compared the efficacy and safety of valsartan and rosuvastatin combination therapy with each treatment alone in hypercholesterolemic hypertensive patients. Subjects and Methods: Patients who met inclusion criteria were randomized to receive 1 of the following 2-month drug regimens: valsartan 160 mg plus rosuvastatin 20 mg, valsartan 160 mg plus placebo, or rosuvastatin 20 mg plus placebo. The primary efficacy variables were change in sitting diastolic blood pressure
Chest trauma can lead to various cardiac complications ranging from simple arrhythmias to myocardial rupture. An acute myocardial infarction (AMI) is a rare complication that can occur after chest trauma. We report a case of 66-year-old male who suffered a blunt chest trauma from a traffic accident resulting in an AMI. The coronary angiography revealed an eccentric 50% narrowing of the ostium of left anterior descending artery (LAD) by a dissection flap with calcification. Intravascular ultrason
Apical ballooning syndrome (ABS) is a unique reversible cardiomyopathy that is frequently precipitated by emotional or physical stress. In addition, the few drugs reported to precipitate ABS were either illegal or strictly controlled for medical use. This paper reports a case of ABS precipitated by a dietary supplement. Our case accentuates the potential risk of dietary supplements containing synephrine, which is uncontrolled and available to the general public. Therefore, the Korea Food and Drug
Purpose: Plasma lipoprotein-associated phospholipase A2 (Lp-PLA2) binds to low-density lipoprotein. The levels of Lp-PLA2 reflect the plaque burden, and are upregulatedin acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We investigated the diagnostic value of Lp-PLA2 levels and found that it might be a potential biomarker for ACS. Materials and Methods: We classified 226 study participants into three groups: patients without significant stenosis (control group), patients with significant stenosis with stable angi
Purpose: We evaluated the incidence, predictors, and prognosis of coronary artery aneurysm (CAA) after second-generationdrug-eluting stent (DES) implantation. Materials and Methods: A total of 976 consecutive patients (1245 lesions) who underwent follow-up angiography after secondgenerationDES implantation were analyzed. Incidence and predictors of CAA were assessed, and clinical prognosis was comparedwith 34 cases of CAA after first-generation DES implantation using previous CAA registry data.
A 33-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with chest pain and exertional dyspnea. Two-dimensional echocardiography showed prominent trabeculations and deep intertrabecular recesses, findings consistent with noncompaction of the ventricular myocardium. Thoracoabdominal CT and cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) revealed situs ambiguous with polysplenia and noncompaction of the left ventricular myocardium. CMR also demonstrated delayed enhancement of the trabeculations located at the api
Purpose: To evaluate the potential of prospective electrocardiography (ECG)-gated 64-slice multidetector computed tomography (MDCT) for evaluation of myocardial enhancement, infarct size, and stent patency after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) with stenting in patients with myocardial infarction. Materials and Methods: Seventeen patients who were admitted with acute myocardial infarction were examined with prospective ECG-gated 64-slice cardiac MDCT and magnetic resonance (MR) imaging a
Background and Objectives We sought to determine whether an elevated homocysteine (Hcy) level is associated with a worse prognosis in Korean patients with coronary artery disease (CAD). Subjects and Methods A total of 5839 patients (60.4% male, mean age 61.3±11.2 years) with CAD were enrolled from 2000 to 2010 at Gangnam Severance Hospital. CAD was diagnosed by invasive coronary angiography. Laboratory values including Hcy level were obtained on the day of coronary angiography and analyses w
Brain natriuretic peptide (BNP), a neurohormone secreted from the ventricular myocardium in response to hemodynamic load/wall stress, in congestive heart failure (CHF). This study was performed to evaluate the correlation between BNP level and clinical presentations and hemodynamic parameters obtained by echo-Doppler (echo-Doppler) analysis, and its relation with disease severity and ventricular load/wall stress. CHF patients (n=246) were subgrouped by clinical presentations and echo-Doppler fin
