About the Lab
Professor Bo Kyung Koo's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of metabolic liver diseases, particularly non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), with an emphasis on genetic, metabolic, and musculoskeletal factors influencing disease progression. The lab investigates the roles of biomarkers such as GDF15 and genetic variants (e.g., PNPLA3, TM6SF2, KCNJ11) in NAFLD severity and insulin resistance. It also explores the interplay between sarcopenia, muscle strength, and liver fibrosis, highlighting the clinical implications of muscle health in metabolic and cardiovascular outcomes. Sarcopenia is a syndrome characterized by loss of skeletal muscle mass and strength that can increase the risk of physical disability, chronic conditions such as diabetes mellitus and cardiovascular diseases, and long-term mortality. Sarcopenia adversely affects not only the elderly population, but also young adults. This study focused on the characterization of mesenchymal stromal cells (MSCs) from the chorion of human full term placenta from 15 donors.
