About the Lab

Professor Bong-Jae Lee's research lab specializes in otorhinolaryngology and head and neck surgery, with a focus on clinical and translational research in sinonasal disorders, airway management, and pediatric head and neck tumors. The lab investigates anatomical variations and surgical outcomes in septoplasty, evaluates airway intubation techniques using imaging landmarks, and explores treatment strategies for rare pediatric malignancies such as sarcomas and neuroectodermal tumors. Additionally, the lab contributes to understanding the neuroendocrine regulation of reproductive hormones through molecular studies on transcription factors like TTF1 in circadian rhythms. These diverse research directions reflect a strong integration of clinical practice, diagnostic innovation, and molecular biology in ENT and neuroendocrine systems.

Overcorrected Septum as a Complication of Septoplasty
Bong-Jae Lee, Yoo‐Sam Chung, Yong Ju Jang
American Journal of Rhinology

BACKGROUND: After septoplasty, the rhinologic surgeon often encounters an unexpected deviation of the septum toward the side contralateral to the initial deflection, a phenomenon which we would call an overcorrection. METHODS: To investigate the incidence of overcorrected septum, we assessed the incidence of overcorrection in different age groups by reviewing medical records. RESULTS: Of 1124 patients, 22 (2.0%) showed occurrence of overcorrection after septoplasty. The incidence of overcorrecti

Bedside Prediction of Airway Length in Adults and Children

SJR Q1AnesthesiologyOA

BACKGROUND: Malpositioning of the endotracheal tube within the airway leads to serious complications such as endobronchial intubation. Prediction of the correct depth of an endotracheal tube is important and should be individualized. The manubriosternal joint (MSJ) is on the same horizontal plane with the tracheal carina. We compared the straight length from the upper incisor to the MSJ in the fully extended position (incisor-MSJ extension length) with the length from the upper incisor to the ca

The locoregional recurrence-free, distant metastasis-free, disease-free, disease-specific, and overall survival rates did not differ between PORT and CCRT groups. In addition, there were no significant differences in incidence rates of acute and chronic toxicities between the two groups.

Malignant tumors of the sinonasal tract in the pediatric population
Jong Sook Yi, Gye Song Cho, Myung Joo Shim, Jin‐Young Min, Yoo‐Sam Chung, Bong-Jae Lee
SJR Q2Acta Oto-Laryngologica

The 20 patients consisted of 12 males and 8 females, ranging in age from 1 to 16 years, with a median age of 9.6 years at diagnosis. More than half of the patients presented with nasal obstruction as the primary symptom, and mean symptom duration to diagnosis was 5.4 months. Primary tumor sites included the paranasal sinuses alone in four patients, the nasal cavity alone in eight, and both in eight. Eight tumors were sarcomas and seven were lymphomas. The remaining tumors included three olfactor

Thyroid Transcription Factor 1, a Homeodomain Containing Transcription Factor, Contributes to Regulating Periodic Oscillations in GnRH Gene Expression

Thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF1), a member of the Nkx family of transcription factors required for basal forebrain morphogenesis, functions in the postnatal hypothalamus as a transcriptional regulator of genes encoding neuromodulators and hypophysiotrophic peptides. One of these peptides is gonadotrophin-releasing hormone (GnRH). In the present study, we show that Ttf1 mRNA abundance varies in a diurnal and melatonin-dependent fashion in the preoptic area of the rat, with maximal Ttf1 expre

SJR Q4Korean Journal of Otorhinolaryngology-head and Neck Surgery

Objectives:Organizing hematoma of the maxillary sinus can be developed by organizing procedure of hematoma in the unaerated maxillary sinus. To our knowledge, this is the second article describing organizing hematoma in the maxillary sinus. We experienced 7 cases recently, and aimed to describe clinical features, radiologic characteristics, and pathological findings. Materials and Methods:Seven patients were diagnosed as organizing hematoma athologically. We reviewed computed tomography (CT) and

Household Types and Suicide Ideation among Elderly People in Korea
Bong-Jae Lee, Yunjin Oh
Journal of the Korean Home Economics Association

The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between household types and suicide ideation among elderly people in Korea. We collected information on 220 elderly individuals(aging over 60), 171 of whom were living alone and 49 of whom were living with their families. The results showed that; 1) number of children, health status, level of stress, and depressive symptoms were all related to the suicide ideation among both groups, and 2) individuals living alone had lower sense of contr

Peripartum Cardiomyopathy Presenting at Cesarean Section - A case report -
Bong-Jae Lee, Dong-Ok Kim
SJR Q1Korean Journal of AnesthesiologyOA

Peripartum cardiomyopathy (PPCM) is defined as the onset of acute heart failure without any demonstrable cause in the last trimester of pregnancy or within the first 6 months after delivery. It is characterized by ventricular dilatation and poor ventricular contractility but it is often unrecognized because the symptoms of normal pregnancy commonly mimic those of mild heart failure. The incidence varies from 1 in 1,300 to 1 in 15,000 pregnancies. We encountered a patient, who developed sudden pu

This study investigates the impacts of alcohol-induced stress and social support on individual health and well-being of alcoholics. Specifically, this dissertation study aimed to test: (a) the direct effect of alcohol-induced stress on three outcome variables that are relevant to an individual's health and well-being, (b) the direct effect of social support on three outcome variables, and (c) the interaction effect between alcohol-induced stress and social support on three outcome variables.
