About the Lab
Professor Boong Nyun Kim's research lab focuses on the neurodevelopmental and environmental influences on child and adolescent mental health, with a particular emphasis on the interplay between genetic factors, environmental toxicants (such as phthalates, bisphenols, and heavy metals), and neurodevelopmental disorders like ADHD and autism spectrum traits. The lab investigates gene-environment interactions, especially involving glutamate receptor genes and endocrine-disrupting chemicals, using longitudinal birth cohort studies and clinical population analyses. BACKGROUND: Although attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) symptoms were identified as a key risk factor for Internet gaming disorder (IGD), the effect of ADHD comorbidity on longitudinal course of IGD in the clinical population remains to be further examined. This study aimed to investigate whether ADHD comorbidity in IGD patients affects the recovery, recurrence rates, and trajectories of IGD symptoms, and examine the relationship between the changes in IGD and ADHD symptoms. METHODS
Multi-pollutant mixtures of prenatal and postnatal exposures to four metals affected child IQ at 6 years of age. We found a relationship between manganese exposure at both age 4, and 6 years and children's IQ. Additional studies are warranted to confirm these associations and to control the exposure to different metals during pregnancy and preschool childhood.
