About the Lab

Professor Bora Lee's research lab specializes in perioperative medicine, with a primary focus on optimizing surgical outcomes through evidence-based anesthetic and metabolic management strategies. Key research directions include the impact of preoperative nutrition (such as carbohydrate drinks) on insulin resistance and glucose variability in diabetic and older adult patients, as well as the use of intravenous iron to improve postoperative hemoglobin levels and reduce anemia-related morbidity. The lab also investigates airway management techniques and their effects on ventilation and patient safety during anesthesia. These studies aim to enhance patient recovery, reduce complications, and improve clinical decision-making in surgical settings.

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

The reduced oropharyngeal leak pressure in the extended neck position was not associated with impaired ventilation except with the air-Q self-pressurizing airway. The flexed neck position significantly worsens ventilation and the alignment between the SAD and glottis despite improving the seal except with the air-Q self-pressurizing airway and LMA Proseal.

A randomised trial evaluating the effect of intraoperative iron administration
Bora Lee, Eun Jung Kim, Jaewoo Song, Young‐Soo Jung, Bon‐Nyeo Koo
SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Perioperative anaemia increases postoperative morbidity and mortality, and iron deficiency is anaemia's most common cause in surgical patients. Preoperative intravenous iron increases postoperative haemoglobin; however, data regarding intraoperative intravenous iron's effectiveness are inadequate. This study examined intraoperative intravenous iron's effects on postoperative haemoglobin levels in adults. Fifty-seven healthy subjects (aged 19-40 years) scheduled for bimaxillary orthognathic surge

Preoperative Carbohydrate Drink Intake Increases Glycemic Variability in Patients with Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus in Total Joint Arthroplasty: A Prospective Randomized Trial
Bora Lee, So Yeon Kim, Byung Woo Cho, Sungmin Suh, Kwan Kyu Park, Yong Seon Choi
SJR Q1World Journal of SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Preoperative carbohydrate treatment attenuates insulin resistance and improves metabolism to an anabolic state. Despite these benefits, impaired glycemic control and aspiration risk related to gastroparesis represent concerns for patients with diabetes undergoing surgery. This randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of oral carbohydrate therapy on perioperative glucose variability, metabolic responses, and gastric volume in diabetic patients undergoing elective total hip

Optimal location for continuous catheter analgesia among the femoral triangle, proximal, or distal adductor canal after total knee arthroplasty: a randomized double-blind controlled trial
Bora Lee, Sang Jun Park, Kwan Kyu Park, Hee Jung Kim, Yong Suk Lee, Yong Seon Choi
SJR Q1Regional Anesthesia & Pain MedicineOA

BACKGROUND: Pain management after total knee arthroplasty is essential to improve early mobilization, rehabilitation, and recovery. Continuous adductor canal (AC) block provides postoperative analgesia while preserving quadriceps strength. However, there have been inconsistencies regarding the optimal location for continuous catheter block. We compared continuous femoral triangle, proximal AC, and distal AC blocks for postoperative analgesia after total knee arthroplasty. METHODS: Patients under

SJR Q1Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic SurgeonsOA

INTRODUCTION: Preoperative carbohydrate drinks are recommended to reduce fasting time before surgery. Older adults are at risk of pulmonary aspiration and hyperglycemia after consuming carbohydrate drinks because of increased insulin resistance and delayed gastric emptying. We investigated the effects of oral carbohydrate drinks on perioperative insulin resistance, metabolic responses, and gastric volume in older adults. METHODS: Fifty-six patients (aged more than 65 years) were randomly assigne

Home Return After Surgery in Patients Aged over 85 Years is Associated with Preoperative Albumin Levels, the Type of Surgery, and APACHE II Score
Bora Lee, Sungwon Na, Miran Park, Sung Yeon Ham, Jeongmin Kim
SJR Q1World Journal of SurgeryOA

BACKGROUND: Owing to an aging society, both the number of operations for patients aged >85 years and the average age of patients admitted to the intensive care unit (ICU) are rapidly increasing. However, mortality is not an appropriate outcome measurement in patients aged >85 years; a more important outcome is home return (HR), because quality of life is valuable to these patients. We identified predictors for HR of patients aged >85 years admitted to the ICU after surgery. METHODS: Retrospectiv

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract Anaesthesiologists are increasingly involved in nonoperating room anaesthesia (NORA) for fluoroscopic procedures. However, the radiation exposure of medical staff differs among NORA settings. Therefore, we aimed to investigate the radiation environment generated by fluoroscopic endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP) and the radiation exposure of anaesthesiologists. The dose area product (DAP), radiation entrance dose (RED), and fluoroscopy time (FT) according to the proce

SJR Q1Scientific ReportsOA

Abstract The use of programmed intermittent epidural bolus for postoperative analgesia may have greater analgesic efficacy than continuous epidural infusion. However, the rapid delivery speed used with an epidural bolus is more likely to increase intracranial pressure. We compared the effects of lumbar epidural bolus versus continuous infusion epidural analgesia on intracranial pressure in children using optic nerve sheath diameter as a marker. We randomly assigned 40 paediatric patients to bolu
