About the Lab
Professor Byung Jin Kim's research lab focuses on the pathophysiology of metabolic and ocular diseases, with a particular emphasis on the roles of zinc signaling, oxidative stress, and inflammatory pathways in retinal and pancreatic islet cell injury. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms underlying ischemia/reperfusion injury in the retina and the contribution of c-Jun N-terminal kinase (JNK) signaling to neuronal cell death. Additionally, the lab explores the interplay between metabolic syndrome, nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), and vascular stiffness, especially in the context of lifestyle factors such as smoking and alcohol consumption. Their work integrates preclinical models, clinical epidemiology, and molecular biology to identify therapeutic targets for chronic metabolic and neurodegenerative conditions.
