About the Lab

Professor Byung Ju Lee's research lab specializes in human-computer interaction, with a focus on understanding user performance in dynamic and variable-timing tasks, particularly in interactive systems such as video games and real-time interfaces. The lab investigates how temporal variability in input timing affects user accuracy and response behavior, using empirical studies and human factors analysis. A key research direction involves moving-target acquisition tasks under unpredictable conditions, aiming to improve the design of responsive and adaptive user interfaces. The lab also explores cognitive load and perceptual-motor performance in time-critical interaction scenarios.

Understanding User Performance in Variable-Timing Moving-Target Acquisition
Sobin Jeon, Jonghyun Kim, Byungjoo Lee
Journal of the HCI Society of Korea

Moving-target acquisition (MTA) tasks require users to press a button when a moving target reaches an acquisition line. Previous studies on MTA have mainly examined cases in which the target appears repeatedly in a fixed input period, making it predictable to users when to press the button. However, this assumption does not hold in many real-world applications where temporal variability is prevalent, such as video games. Thus, this study investigates user performance in variable-timing MTA tasks
