About the Lab
Professor Byung Kyu Ahn's research lab specializes in gastrointestinal and oncological diseases, with a strong focus on the molecular mechanisms underlying colorectal and gastric cancers. The lab investigates genetic and molecular markers such as microsatellite instability (MSI-H), somatic mutations, and protein expression (e.g., Smad4) to improve cancer prognosis and treatment strategies. Additionally, the lab explores clinical factors influencing disease progression and outcomes, including the role of gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) and proton pump inhibitor use in idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis, as well as risk factors for hemorrhoids in the population. The research integrates clinical data with next-generation sequencing (NGS) and pathological analysis to identify biomarkers and optimize surgical and medical interventions.

15In Korean patients with IPF, the prevalence of GERD was lower than in other countries. PPI use for at least 4 months may have a protective effect against IPF-related mortality.
A number of somatic mutations presumed to be relevant to colorectal cancer with peritoneal metastasis were identified in our study by NGS.
PURPOSE: Replication error is an important mechanism in carcinogenesis. The microsatellite instability (MSI-H) of colorectal cancers is associated with the development of multiple cancers. The influence of MSI-H on the development of multiple gastric cancers in sporadic gastric cancer patients has not been defined. This study was performed to reveal the association between the clinicopathologic features and MSI in sporadic gastric cancers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Between July 2004 and March 2009,
Smad4 protein is of no value in predicting recurrence after curative therapy in colorectal cancer, but it may be helpful in identifying a subset of patients with early recurrence after curative therapy.
SD antibiotic prophylaxis with second-generation cephalosporin and metronidazole is equivalent to a three-dose prophylaxis for preventing SSI in elective colorectal surgery. But further study would be needed to clarify this because of the small number of participants.
The diagnostic and surgical incidence density was 13.9 and 5.7 per 1000 person-years, respectively. Hemorrhoids occurred most frequently in men in their 40s. The metropolitan area, high income level and alcohol consumption were associated with an increased frequency of hemorrhoids.
BACKGROUND: Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP) is a rare complication of Crohn's disease (CD), and it is uncertain whether it is associated with CD itself or with its treatment. We describe a case of CIDP-like neuropathy as an initial symptom of CD. The neurologic symptoms of the patient which responded partially to intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) recovered after resection of the appendiceal CD. CASE PRESENTATION: A 17-year-old male had experienced three separate attacks
Reconstruction using the latissimus dorsi myocutaneous flap, including muscle fascia structures, is a potential treatment option for severely infected large abdominal wall defects.
