About the Lab

Professor Chae-Yong Kim's research lab specializes in neuro-oncology and radiosurgery, focusing on improving treatment outcomes for brain tumors such as glioblastoma and central neurocytoma. The lab investigates molecular mechanisms of tumor resistance, particularly in relation to hypoxia, apoptosis, and DNA repair pathways, and explores chemosensitizing strategies using drugs like levetiracetam and targeted agents such as cilengitide. A key focus is on optimizing stereotactic radiosurgery and chemoradiotherapy regimens to enhance survival and functional outcomes in patients with primary and recurrent gliomas.

Selection of human cervical epithelial cells that possess reduced apoptotic potential to low-oxygen conditions.

Since human papillomavirus (HPV) infection is strongly associated with cervical neoplasia and tumor hypoxia has prognostic significance in human cervical carcinomas, we examined the relationship between hypoxia and apoptosis in human cervical epithelial cells expressing high-risk HPV type 16 oncoproteins. In vitro, hypoxia stimulated both p53 induction and apoptosis in primary cervical epithelial cells infected with the HPV E6 and E7 genes but not in cervical fibroblasts infected with E6 and E7.

BACKGROUND: A chemosensitizing effect of levetiracetam (LEV) has been suggested because LEV inhibits O-6 methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT). However, the survival benefit of LEV has not been clinically documented. The objective of this study was to assess the survival benefit of LEV compared with other antiepileptic drugs as a chemosensitizer to temozolomide for patients with glioblastoma. METHODS: In total, 103 consecutive patients with primary glioblastoma who received concomitant chem

BACKGROUND: Little is known about long-term results of gamma knife (GK) stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) as a primary or a secondary postoperative therapy for central neurocytomas (CNs). The authors retrospectively reviewed long-term outcomes of 13 patients with CN treated with GK SRS. METHODS: Thirteen patients were treated with GK SRS as a primary (6 patients) or a secondary postoperative therapy (7 patients). Follow-up clinical status and brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) were thoroughly

Short-term VD secondary to the surgical insult and the recurrence of the tumor were strong predictors of long-term visual outcomes after surgical treatment for CRP. STR alone may be an ineffective strategy for achieving tumor control and optimal visual outcomes in patients with CRP.

SJR Q1International Journal of CancerOA

The prognosis of patients diagnosed with glioblastoma remains dismal in spite of the current concomitant chemoradiotherapy with temozolomide. In particular, the resistance to temozolomide appears to be the greatest obstacle to the treatment of glioblastoma. In the present study, we evaluated in vitro and in vivo the antitumor effects of combination therapy of cilengitide with belotecan, a camptothecin derivate, to treat experimental glioblastoma. The therapeutic effects of the drugs on the U87MG
