About the Lab
Professor Chaewon Shin's research lab focuses on the neuropathological and clinical aspects of neurodegenerative disorders, particularly Parkinson’s disease and Huntington’s disease. The lab investigates the role of gut-brain axis components—such as short-chain fatty acids and alpha-synuclein pathology—in disease onset and progression, with a strong emphasis on biomarkers, blood-brain barrier integrity, and non-motor symptoms. Using clinical, imaging, and pathological approaches, the lab aims to identify early diagnostic indicators and understand the neurobiological mechanisms underlying cognitive and autonomic dysfunction in neurodegenerative conditions.

The study demonstrated that the NMS burdens are not associated with iron accumulation in the deep nuclei of patients with PD. These results suggest that future neuroimaging studies on the pathology of NMSs in PD should use more specific and detailed clinical tools and recruit PD patients with severe NMSs.
