About the Lab

Professor Changhoon Song's research lab focuses on advancing biomedical and materials science through innovative approaches in cancer therapy and energy storage. The lab investigates prognostic biomarkers and treatment response in gastrointestinal and head and neck cancers, particularly using pathological response grading and molecular signaling pathways to improve patient outcomes. In parallel, the lab develops functional nanomaterial-based devices, such as high-voltage supercapacitors with shape memory for biomedical applications, emphasizing materials design for energy efficiency and biocompatibility. The integration of clinical oncology with materials engineering defines the lab’s interdisciplinary research direction.

There is ongoing debate regarding the significance of complete or near-complete response after neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) for rectal cancer. This study assessed the prognostic value of the Dworak tumor regression grade (TRG) following neoadjuvant CRT and surgery primarily in patients with pathological stage (ypStage) II and III rectal cancer. The records of 331 patients who underwent neoadjuvant CRT followed by total mesorectal excision between 2004 and 2015 were retrospectively reviewe

SJR Q1Advanced Functional Materials

Abstract A high‐voltage supercapacitor with shape memory for driving an integrated NO 2 gas sensor is fabricated using a Norland Optical Adhesive 63 polymer substrate, which can recover the original shape after deformation by short‐time heating. The supercapacitor consists of multiwalled carbon nanotube electrodes and organic electrolyte. By using organic electrolyte consisting of adiponitrile, acetonitrile, and dimethyl carbonate in an optimized volume ratio of 1:1:1, a high operation voltage o

Adjuvant single-fraction radiotherapy is safe and effective for intractable keloids
Changhoon Song, H.G. Wu, Hak Chang, I. H. Kim, Sung Whan Ha
SJR Q2Journal of Radiation ResearchOA

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility and efficacy of high-dose, single-fraction electron beam radiotherapy for therapy-resistant keloids. Before 2010, intractable keloids were treated at our institution with post-operative irradiation of 6-15 Gy in 3-5 fractionations. For convenience and cost effectiveness, we have changed our treatment protocol to high-dose single-fraction radiotherapy. A total of 12 patients with 16 keloid lesions were treated from January 2010 to January 2013 i

INTRODUCTION: Evaluating the expression of signaling molecule proteins from the mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathway and the phosphatidylinositol-3-kinase (PI3K) pathway in invasive breast cancers may identify prognostic marker(s) associated with early relapse. METHODS: Immunohistochemical analyses of phosphatase and tensin homologue deleted on chromosome 10 (PTEN), PI3K-p110alpha, phospho-AKT, phospho-p70S6 kinase, phospho-S6 ribosomal protein, phospho-RAF, phospho-p44/42 MAPK, and h

SJR Q1The Laryngoscope

OBJECTIVES: To analyze the impact of neoadjuvant chemotherapy (CT) on the treatment of early-stage nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC) as compared with radiotherapy (RT) alone. METHODS: We analyzed retrospectively the outcome of 60 previously untreated and histologically confirmed early-stage NPC patients treated with either RT alone or with neoadjuvant CT followed by RT (CT/RT) at the Seoul National University Hospital between 1986 and 2004. Neoadjuvant CT consisted of three cycles with 5-fluouroura

These data suggest that, following radical prostatectomy, elective WPRT during SRT may improve bRFS compared with PBRT in selected patients. Patients with preoperative PSA level ≤20 ng/mL or pre-SRT PSA level ≥0.4 ng/mL represent a potential subgroup who benefit most from receiving WPRT. Results of prospective randomized trials are awaited to confirm this finding.

Survival impact of prophylactic cranial irradiation in small-cell lung cancer in the modern era of magnetic resonance imaging staging
Yu Jin Lim, Changhoon Song, Hak Jae Kim, Korea Central Cancer Registry
SJR Q1Radiation OncologyOA

BACKGROUND: In the modern era of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) staging, the benefit of prophylactic cranial irradiation (PCI) in patients with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC) has been controversial. This study evaluated the prognostic impact of PCI in patients with limited- or extensive-stage SCLC who had no brain metastases at diagnosis according to MRI. METHODS: Data from newly diagnosed patients in 2014 from the Korean Association for Lung Cancer Registry database were used. Patients with li

Minimal Width for Universal Property of Deep RNN
Changhoon Song, Geonho Hwang, Jun ho Lee, Myungjoo Kang
arXiv (Cornell University)OA

A recurrent neural network (RNN) is a widely used deep-learning network for dealing with sequential data. Imitating a dynamical system, an infinite-width RNN can approximate any open dynamical system in a compact domain. In general, deep networks with bounded widths are more effective than wide networks in practice; however, the universal approximation theorem for deep narrow structures has yet to be extensively studied. In this study, we prove the universality of deep narrow RNNs and show that

Accurate Non-Contact Body Temperature Measurement with Thermal Camera under Varying Environment Conditions
Changhoon Song, Sukhan Lee
2022 16th International Conference on Ubiquitous Information Management and Communication (IMCOM)

Non-contact measurement of body temperature is preferred due not only to the convenience it provides but also to the necessity for preventing medical staffs and patients from infection and safety risk. For non-contact body temperature measurement, thermal cameras have been used to measure the temperature of facial skins. However, the problem is that temperature of facial skins varies according to varying environmental conditions such as outside temperature, subject activities prior to measuremen
