About the Lab

Professor Chanyun Kim's research lab specializes in glaucoma diagnostics and imaging, with a focus on optimizing optical coherence tomography (OCT) measurements for early detection and monitoring of glaucomatous damage. The lab investigates retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL) and ganglion cell complex (GCC) thickness as key biomarkers, particularly in challenging populations such as high-myopia and hypertensive patients. Research also emphasizes real-world treatment adherence and clinical patterns in glaucoma management, integrating imaging, demographic, and systemic factors to improve patient outcomes.

Structure–Function Relationship and Diagnostic Value of Macular Ganglion Cell Complex Measurement Using Fourier-Domain OCT in Glaucoma
Chan Yun Kim, Eun Suk Lee, Gong Je Seong, Ji Hyun Kim, Hyonggin An, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual Science

A curvilinear function best described the relationship between VF sensitivity and GCC thickness. Macular GCC thickness and RNFL thickness showed similar diagnostic performance for detecting early, moderate, and severe glaucoma.

Comparing the ganglion cell complex and retinal nerve fibre layer measurements by Fourier domain OCT to detect glaucoma in high myopia
N R Kim, E S Lee, Gong Je Seong, Sung Yong Kang, Ji Hyun Kim, Seung Hwan Hong, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1British Journal of OphthalmologyOA

The ability to diagnose glaucoma with macular GCC thickness was comparable with that with peripapillary RNFL thickness in high-myopia patients. Macular GCC thickness measurements may be a good alternative or a complementary measurement to RNFL thickness assessment in the clinical evaluation of glaucoma in patients with high myopia.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: This study aimed to investigate treatment patterns and medication adherence of glaucoma. It also identified key factors associated with non-adherence. METHODS: It was a cross-sectional, observational study. Patients who use eye-drops for ≤2 years were recruited at 15 eye clinics from March to November 2013. Data were collected through self-administered questionnaires and medical chart review. Medication adherence was evaluated using patients' self-report on pill count and define

Spectral-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography for Detection of Localized Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Defects in Patients With Open-Angle Glaucoma
Chan Yun Kim
Archives of OphthalmologyOA

The deviation map from Cirrus OCT was more sensitive in detecting RNFL defects than the clock-hour and quadrant maps derived from cross-sectional peripapillary RNFL measurements by Stratus and Cirrus OCTs. The ability to detect localized RNFL defects on clock-hour or quadrant RNFL maps did not significantly differ between Stratus OCT and Cirrus OCT.

Determinants of Perimacular Inner Retinal Layer Thickness in Normal Eyes Measured by Fourier-Domain Optical Coherence Tomography
Chan Yun Kim, Ji Hyun Kim, Junwon Lee, Eun Suk Lee, Gong Je Seong, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1Investigative Ophthalmology & Visual ScienceOA

Inner retinal layer thickness, as measured by FD-OCT, varies significantly with age and axial length. The effect is small but clinically relevant in the interpretation of inner retinal layer thickness measurements.

Comparison of Macular Ganglion Cell Complex Thickness by Fourier-Domain OCT in Normal Tension Glaucoma and Primary Open-Angle Glaucoma
Chan Yun Kim, Samin Hong, Ji Hyun Kim, Seung Soo Rho, Gong Je Seong, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1Journal of GlaucomaOA

GCC loss in the NTG group was more localized compared with diffuse GCC loss in the POAG group. Perimacular GCC parameters could be a good alternative or supplement to peripapillary RNFL measurements for diagnosis and research in patients with NTG.

Vascular and metabolic comorbidities in open‐angle glaucoma with low‐ and high‐teen intraocular pressure: a cross‐sectional study from South Korea

SJR Q1Acta OphthalmologicaOA

PURPOSE: To assess the associations between vascular and metabolic comorbidities and the prevalence of open-angle glaucoma (OAG) with low-teen and high-teen intraocular pressure (IOP) in Korea. METHODS: Cross-sectional data from the Korean National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2008 to 2012 were analysed. Participants diagnosed with OAG with normal IOP were further classified into low-teen IOP (IOP ≤ 15 mmHg) and high-teen IOP (15 mmHg < IOP ≤ 21 mmHg) groups. Using multiple logis

Long-term clinical outcomes of Ahmed valve implantation in patients with refractory glaucoma

SJR Q1PLoS ONEOA

AGV implantation was successful for IOP control in patients with refractive glaucoma in the long term. However, the success rate of surgery decreased over time. Preoperative high IOP and severe complications related to the operation were significant risk factors for failure.

Changes in subfoveal choroidal thickness and choroidal extravascular density by spectral domain optical coherence tomography after haemodialysis: a pilot study
Ji Won Jung, Hee Seung Chin, Dae Hyung Lee, Myung Hun Yoon, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1British Journal of Ophthalmology

In the SD-OCT image, the SFCT became thicker and the choroidal extravascular density increased after HD in patients with CRF. The decrease in SBP after HD was associated with an increase in SFCT. The choroidal autoregulatory control of ocular hemodynamic change and shifting of fluid and molecules between the blood and choroidal interstitium might be involved in the mechanism of these choroidal changes.

Influence of Cataract on Time Domain and Spectral Domain Optical Coherence Tomography Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Measurements
Chan Yun Kim, Hun Lee, Eun Suk Lee, Ji Hyun Kim, Samin Hong, Gong Je Seong, Chan Yun Kim
SJR Q1Journal of Glaucoma

The presence of cataract significantly affects RNFL thickness measurements by SD-OCT and TD-OCT. SD-OCT, which demonstrated more consistent change of RNFL measurements after cataract extraction, is not necessarily associated with lower RNFL thickness measurement performance in cataract cases, as more participants with cataract were excluded because of poor image quality or low SS, which was more associated with TD-OCT than SD-OCT.

Level of Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor in Aqueous Humor and Surgical Results of Ahmed Glaucoma Valve Implantation in Patients With Neovascular Glaucoma

SJR Q1Journal of GlaucomaOA

The level of VEGF in aqueous humor was significantly higher in the failure group after the Ahmed glaucoma implantation compared with the success group. Our results imply that VEGF may play a role in determining surgical success after Ahmed valve implantation in patients with NVG.
