About the Lab
Professor Cheol-Sik Kim's research lab specializes in metabolic diseases, with a primary focus on type 2 diabetes and obesity. The lab investigates the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying insulin resistance, adipokine profiles, and body fat distribution, particularly examining the role of adiponectin in diabetic and non-diabetic obese individuals. It also explores personalized treatment strategies, including pharmacogenomics of DPP-4 inhibitors and telemedicine-based insulin dose management using mobile technology.

BACKGROUND: We designed a system for diabetes patients treated with glargine, a long-acting insulin, to make an automatic adjustment of insulin dose based on glucose level data and to provide the patients with the needed insulin dose by using a short message service (SMS). We also compared diabetes patients who used our system with patients who received the conventional titration scheme. METHODS: Included were 100 type 2 diabetes patients whose blood glucose was suboptimally controlled on their
OBJECTIVE: Clinical aspects of diabetes and obesity are somewhat different, even at similar levels of insulin resistance. The purpose of this study was to determine differences in body fat distribution and serum adiponectin concentrations in diabetic and non-diabetic obese participants. We were also interested in identifying the characteristics of insulin resistance in these two groups, particularly from the standpoint of adiponectin. RESEARCH METHODS AND PROCEDURES: Adiponectin concentrations o
Incretin hormone-based therapy in type 2 diabetes has been widely used, and dipepdityl peptidase-4 (DPP-4) inhibitors, which prevent incretin degradation, have become popular oral hypoglycemic agents. The efficacy of DPP-4 inhibitors varies from individuals, and factors determining responses to DPP-4 inhibitors have not been fully established. We aimed to investigate whether genetic variations in glucagon-like peptide (GLP-1) receptor are associated with responses to DPP-4 inhibitors in patients
Lifelong strict self-care is essential in the management of diabetes, along with easy access to the health care system (1–3). However, there is an evident limitation in fulfilling these conditions in the current health care system, which is oriented toward outpatient care (4–7). Thus, various strategies have been designed to improve the quality and efficiency of treating diabetic patients. Wireless technology is a worldwide communication system that allows a person to contact others anywhere at
OBJECTIVE: Dyslipidaemia is a well-known manifestation of thyroid dysfunction. Recently, small low-density lipoprotein (LDL) particle size has been linked with development of cardiovascular disease. To better understand the effects of thyroid dysfunction on the development of cardiovascular disease, we examined LDL particle size and lipid profiles in subjects with different thyroid function. METHODS: Included were 46 patients with overt hypothyroidism, 57 patients with subclinical hypothyroidism
Central obesity with visceral fat accumulation and the amount of skeletal muscle mass may influence insulin sensitivity via its capacity for glucose load uptake. We investigated the relationships among the following metabolic variables: ratio of fat area to skeletal muscle area (VMR), percent ideal body weight, body mass index, waist-to-hip circumference (WHR) and visceral fat to subcutaneous fat ratio (VSR) in 114 nondiabetic middle-aged women. Anthropometric parameters, lipid profiles and sex
OBJECTIVE: Low birthweight is associated with insulin resistance later in life, and adiponectin is known to play an important role in insulin resistance. We have investigated whether birthweight has a relationship with adiponectin levels in adolescence. PATIENTS: An at-home questionnaire survey was completed by 660 middle-school students (aged 12-15 years) in Seoul, Korea, and 152 participants were selected randomly based on their birthweight. MEASUREMENTS Subjects were separated into three grou
Low birth weight is associated with insulin resistance and type 2 diabetes in adults. The fetal programming hypothesis has shown that insulin resistance and its associated metabolic disturbances result from a poor gestational environment, for which low birth weight is a surrogate. An at-home questionnaire survey was performed on 660 middle school students (12-15 years) in Seoul, Korea, and 152 cases were randomly selected based on their birth weight. Subjects were divided into three groups accor
Background: Some of the characteristic features of diabetes mellitus in Korea are that 70-80% of patients are non-obese or adult-onset type, and type 1 diabetes is very rare. Occasionally, autoantibodies to glutamic acid decarboxylase(GAD) are found in typical, type 2 diabetes mellitus patients(T2DM). The role of the autoantibody to GAD in T2DM is unknown. The aim of this study was to determine the clinical and biochemical characteristics between GAD-positive and GAD-negative non-obese, adult-on
