Professor Chi-Kyu Won's research lab specializes in regenerative medicine and tissue engineering, with a focus on developing patient-specific cell therapies for liver and biliary diseases. The lab pioneers innovative approaches using chemically derived hepatic progenitor cells, 3D bioprinting, and advanced gene editing technologies such as base and prime editing to create functional, implantable tissues. Key research directions include the fabrication of bioactive scaffolds, long-term hepatocyte culture systems, and the direct reprogramming of somatic cells into functional hepatocytes without genomic integration. These strategies aim to overcome limitations in current liver tissue engineering and offer promising solutions for clinical applications in liver failure and genetic liver disorders.
