About the Lab
Professor Dae-Sik Jang's research lab specializes in natural product chemistry and pharmacology, focusing on the discovery of bioactive compounds from medicinal plants for the prevention and treatment of chronic diseases. The lab primarily investigates plant-derived molecules with anti-diabetic, anti-inflammatory, and neuroprotective activities, particularly targeting advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and aldose reductase as key pathways in diabetic complications. Their work also extends to identifying natural compounds that modulate neuroinflammation and microglial activation, highlighting potential therapeutic applications in neurodegenerative and ischemic brain disorders. The lab employs bioassay-guided fractionation, spectroscopic structural elucidation, and in vitro disease models to validate the therapeutic potential of natural compounds.

15Nine anthraquinones, aurantio-obtusin (1), chryso-obtusin (2), obtusin (3), chryso-obtusin-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (4), physcion (5), emodin (6), chrysophanol (7), obtusifolin (8), and obtusifolin-2-O-beta-D-glucoside (9), isolated from an EtOAc-soluble extract of the seeds of Cassia tora, were subjected to in vitro bioassays to evaluate their inhibitory activity against advanced glycation end products (AGEs) formation and rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR). Among the isolates, compounds 6 and 8 exhi
As part of a project directed toward the discovery of new cancer chemopreventive agents from plants, two new natural products, asparagusic acid anti-S-oxide methyl ester (1) and asparagusic acid syn-S-oxide methyl ester (2), a new acetylenic compound, 2-hydroxyasparenyn [3',4'-trans-2-hydroxy-1-methoxy-4-[5-(4-methoxyphenoxy)-3-penten-1-ynyl]-benzene] (3), as well as eleven known compounds, asparenyn (4), asparenyol (5), (+/-)-1-monopalmitin (6), ferulic acid (7), 1,3-O-di-p-coumaroylglycerol (8
A new cassane diterpene, dipteryxic acid (1), and a new isoflavonolignan, 5-methoxyxanthocercin A (2), as well as four known active compounds, isoliquiritigenin (3), 6,4'-dihydroxy-3'-methoxyaurone (4), sulfuretin (5), and (+/-)-balanophonin (6), and five known inactive compounds, butin, eriodictyol, 7-hydroxychromone, 7,3'-dihydroxy-8,4'-dimethoxyisoflavone, and (-)-lariciresinol, were isolated from an ethyl acetate-soluble extract of the seeds of Dipteryx odorata, using a bioassay based on the
Two new flavan-3-ols, 6-(2-pyrrolidinone-5-yl)-(-)-epicatechin (1) and 8-(2-pyrrolidinone-5-yl)-(-)-epicatechin (2), as well as five known compounds, (-)-epicatechin (3), (+)-catechin (4), proanthocyanidin B-4 (5), (+)-pinoresinol, and p-hydroxybenzoic acid, were isolated from an EtOAc-soluble extract of the roots of Actinidia arguta. The structures of compounds 1 and 2 were elucidated by spectroscopic data interpretation, particularly by extensive 1D- and 2D-NMR studies. All the isolates were e
Microglial activation and its-driven neuroinflammation are characteristic pathogenetic features of neurodiseases, including focal cerebral ischemia. The Artemisia asiatica (Asteraceae) extract and its active component, eupatilin, are well-known to reduce inflammatory responses. But the therapeutic potential of eupatilin against focal cerebral ischemia is not known, along with its anti-inflammatory activities on activated microglia. In this study, we investigated the neuroprotective effect of eup
In our ongoing project directed toward the discovery of novel treatments for diabetic complications from herbal medicines, sixteen compounds including three caffeoylquinic acids and four flavonoids were isolated from an EtOAc-soluble extract of the stems and leaves of Erigeron annuus. All the isolates were evaluated in vitro for inhibitory activity on the formation of advanced glycation end products (AGEs) and rat lens aldose reductase (RLAR). Of these, 3,5-di-O-caffeoyl-epi-quinic acid (3) exhi
